Thing reverts back to human (briefly) for the second time). FF looking for Johnny. Brief retelling of last issue when he quit the team. Johnny ends up in a flophouse in the Bowery where he finds an amnesiac Sub-Mariner. His memory revived by the Torch, Namor returns to his home (his people are not known as 'Atlanteans' here) and, mistakenly believing it's destruction was due to nuclear testing, turns on the human race siccing Giganto on NYC. Giganto is killed with a nuclear bomb, and Namor falls for Sue (who isn't entirely unwilling). Johnny sends Namor and Giganto back out to sea with a flame tornado, and Namor pledges to return at story end. Cover claim shortened to "World's Greatest Comic Magazine".

Igor revealed to be a "Red" spy. Betty encounters the Hulk for the first time, and Ross vows to find and destroy him. Gargoyle kidnaps Hulk and Rick, takes them behind the Iron Curtain. Banner cures the deformed Gargoyle, and the reformed monster helps them to escape before he blows himself up.

COM:    Origin of Doctor Doom. 1st app. of Latveria, Chrono Square, Doom's Castle (in upstate NY), and  Doom's robot duplicate. Merlin mentioned for the first time in MU. Johnny has a HULK #1 comic in the story. Ben and Johnny's antagonistic relationship really begins to bloom. Issue establishes the limits of Johnny's power. Doom captures FF and holds Sue hostage, sending the team into the past to secure the Gems of Merlin. Revealed that Ben was actually Blackbeard in the past. Team returns with bogus treasure, and Ben destroys Doom, who turns out to be a robot. Sue rescues the team, but Doom escapes with a rocket pack at story end.

Spidey gets arrogant, lets the Burglar, who was robbing the studio, run past without stopping him. Death of Ben Parker (unseen). Spidey captures his murderer, sees its the thief from earlier. Secret of FF clothing as 'unstable molecules' revealed. 1st Marvel super-villain team-up. 1st use of the hidden belt buckle eye beam that opens the door to the FF's hidden elevator. The FF have become very public by this issue. Expanded diagram of the Baxter Building. Doom seeks out Namor and fans the flame of his hatred for humankind. Johnny finds a hidden photo of Namor that belongs to Sue. Sue uncertain of her feelings for Namor and Reed. Doom uses Namor to get at the FF, and turns against him once he's got the Baxter Building in space. Namor causes Doom's defeat using the powers of "an electric eel", and Doom is set adrift on a passing meteor-assumed dead. Namor returns their HQ to Earth, dumps the Aero-sub, and returns to the sea at story end.   FF goes monthly.

COM:    The Hulk makes his first long distance leaps that seem like he's flying. Gen. Ross convinces Rick to help them trap the Hulk in a rocket. Banner exposed to radiation in space. Hulk appears in daylight for the first time. Rick gains control over the Hulk. The 2nd feature is a three page retelling of Hulk's origin. In the 3rd feature: 1st app Circus of Crime (unnamed). At story end, Hulk captures the Ringmaster, and he and Rick escape from the military.

The unrequited romance between Blake and Jane is started. Thor rescues Jane from the Executioner and defeats his forces. Executioner is "killed" by his own men while trying to escape with their money. Jane comparing Blake to Thor unfavorably at story end. 2nd and 3rd features are non-MU fantasy stories.

COM:    1st app. of the Xantha, Kurrgo's robot, and the Xanthan spaceship. Torch uses "nova" flame for the 1st time. Kurrgo, to save his doomed planet, sends a robot piloted ship to Earth to capture the FF-who are attending a dinner in their honor in Washington, DC. The robot's hostility ray turns everyone against the team, and they are convinced to return to Planet X. Instead of saving the planet, Reed invents a reducing gas so the inhabitants will all fit into one of their two rockets. Power hungry, Kurrgo is left behind on the doomed world. The FF return to Earth in the second rocket at story end.

    "Trapped by Loki, the God of Mischief!" "The Vengeance of Loki!" "Filbert's Frightful Future" "Off Limits"

COM:    The first two features are a two part story. 1st app. of Asgard and Bifrost in MU. 1st full app. of Odin in JiM #86. Establishing some of the rules of Thor's hammer? Loki manipulates Heimdall to cause his release from where Thor had imprisoned him in the heart of a tree, goes to Earth looking to get revenge. Lures his half brother to him, hypnotizes him, and tries in various ways to get him to discard his hammer. Succeeds, but out of his sight, Thor reverts to Dr. Blake, removing the trance. Thor chases Loki across NYC, finally defeats him by ducking him in the river, establishing that his magic is useless in water. Thor returns him to Asgard where he is presented before Odin and the other Norse gods who are only seen from behind in one panel. Story ends with Jane bubbling about how romantic the battle was. 3rd & 4th features are non-MU fantasy stories.

Ant-Man lured into a trap by jilted girlfriend who is later revealed to be Comrade X. She and her shipmates are turned over to the Coast Guard at story end. 2nd and 3rd features are non-MU strange suspense stories.

    "Prisoners of the Puppet Master!"

COM:    1st attempt by Reed to turn the Thing back to normal. 1st app. of PM puppets and his use of his special radioactive clay. 1st time Alicia says that she likes Ben as the Thing instead of human. Ben misunderstands Reed's research and storms out, and PM turns him against the others with his first puppet. Sue is captured and a disguised Alicia is put in her place. She and Ben take on the rest of the team, but Reed uses the new formula on Ben, changing him back to human-temporarily. PM releases a bunch of prisoners to keep the FF busy while he escapes, but Alicia-realizing how evil her step-father is-intercedes, and during the struggle he goes out a window.   He is presumed dead, and at story end, Ben is consoling the distraught blind girl.

    "The Monster and the Machine!" "The Gladiator from Outer Space!"

COM:    Origin of Hulk retold. 1st app. of Gamma Ray machine that can change Hulk back and forth to Banner. Rick still in control of Hulk. Gen. Ross has developed the Iceberg Missile to stop the Hulk. After the use of the Gamma Machine (which leaves Banner very weak), Hulk now has Banner's brain. In the second feature, 1st app. of foot controls for the Gamma Ray Machine. Mongu comes to Earth with a challenge.    Hulk and Rick fly to the Grand Canyon to meet him. Mongu revealed as a battle suit and the challenge nothing more than a Red trap for the Hulk. Hulk defeats the soldiers but lets them go. The press thinks its a hoax staged by Hulk to prove himself a hero. Banner very weak after the change at story end.

    "On the Trail of the Tomorrow Man!" "Humans Keep Out" "The Changeling"

COM:    1st full app. of Odin (see JiM #85). Zarrko, a scientist from 2262, decides to rule the world, and returns to 1962 in his Time Cube to steal weapons. Thor in a remote desert helping the military test new weapons. Zarrko steals a Cobalt Bomb out from under Thor's nose and returns to the future. Thor follows him using Mjolnir on the advice of Odin, and finds Zarrko has seized control of the weaponless society. With the help of tone of the locals, Thor gains entrance to Zarrko's castle. Time limit of 60 seconds established as amount of time Mjolnir can be out of Thor's hands before he reverts back to Blake. Thor defeats Zarrko, who loses his memory, and returns to 1962 with the bomb. At story end, Jane still coparing Blake to Thor unfavorably. 2nd and 3rd features are non-MU fantasy stories.

COM:    1st time Johnny uses his Nitro Flame. 1st app. of Namor's movie company: (S M Studios (incorrectly called S N Productions). Pogo plane named for the 1st time. 1st app. of Hidden Isle. FF has gone bankrupt (1st time) and is selling off all their equipment. Team splits up briefly. Thing's romance building with Alicia, who is making puppets still, not sculptures. Namor starts a movie studio to take advantage of the teams vulnerability, lures them to Hollywood to kill them, ends up popping the question to Sue. After all he has done, she refuses, but defends him against the rest of the team. At story end, the movie is finished, the FF get their money, and Namor returns peacefully to the sea. Various cameos including James Arness, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Jackie Gleason.

COM:    In Washington, Egghead is fired by the US Atomic Energy Board on the suspicion of selling secrets. Gangsters hire Egghead to dispose of Ant-Man. He devises a plan to turn ants against him and catch him in a box of flypaper. The plan backfires and Ant-Man escapes using springs in his shoes. At story end, the gangsters are caught, but Egghead escapes and is in hiding on Skid Row. 2nd and 3rd features are non-MU strange suspense stories. Cover by Jack Kirby and Sol Brodsky.
