    "The Return of Doctor Doom!"

COM:    1st app. the Ovoids. 1st time Doom uses body switching technology (w/ Reed) and his reducing ray. First time Ben's middle initial, 'J', is used.  Alicia begins to sculpt for the 1st time. Reed studying Sue's invisibility powers. Alicia now carving miniature statues. Doom uses the Marvel offices to get at the FF, captures Reed, recounts the events after FF#6, mentally switches places with him, and convinces the rest of the team that Reed's reducing ray will improve their powers. Alicia the first to question whether Doom is Reed. When cornered, Doom switches back to his own body, but gets caught in the path of the reducing ray and disappears from sight at story end.. Cameo (faces unseen) of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Issue features pin-up page of Torch. Inker and letterer listed for the first time in the credits.

    "Beauty and the Beast!" "The Hordes of General Fang!"

COM:    1st app. the Tyrannoid Subterraneans. Ross asks Banner's help to stop the Hulk. It is established that Tyrannus must drink a magic elixir to stay young. Tyrannus kidnaps Betty. Hulk and Rick follow. Hulk still has Banner's brain. Hulk rescues Rick and Betty and brings the house down on Tyrannus, sealing him in his underground Empire. Betty ends up with amnesia. In the 2nd feature: Hulk gets tagged by the Iceberg Missile (from last issue) but escapes, becoming increasingly unwilling to change back to Banner. Rick and Hulk go to the Llhasa Principality in Asia to free the people from Gen. Fang. Hulk beats the army and leaves Fang to American Troops. Rick and Hulk return to NM, where Hulk is sounding more and more savage. Last of the double features.

Ant-Man is captured, and Beetle grows huge using Pym's growth gas, starts his take-over with the help of all insects, except the ants who remain loyal to AM. With their help, AM stops the invasion, reduces the Beetle back to his original size. At story end, Pym cures the radioactive beetle and releases him. 2nd and 3rd features are non-MU strange suspense stories.

Expanded retelling of FF origin, and flash backs of Reed and Ben in college and in the war. Reed tries a new formula to turn Ben human, but it is temporary again. The team celebrates Sue's birthday.

JJJ's first anti-Spidey campaign. Spidey saves John, and JJJ gives Spidey first jaded write-up in the Bugle. 1st app. Daily Bugle offices. First time May expresses negative feelings against Spidey. In 2nd feature, Fantastic Four appearance (First cross-over). Spidey has hopes of joining the FF to earn money. Deal is off after a series of misunderstandings. (Actually joins the FF in FF1 #347). Chameleon impersonates Spidey to frame him. Spidey captures Chameleon, but the police turn on him before figuring the real culprit in the end. Spidey wishes he's never got super powers. FF on the fence as to whether Spidey's a good guy or bad. First time Spidey uses web parachute and sling shot and his spider sense.

    "The Incredible Hulk"

    "The Metal Master!"

COM:    1st app. the Astrans, and the Teen Brigade. 1st and only app. of Metal Master. The Gamma Ray Machine starts to get quirky in changing the Hulk back to Banner. MM takes over Gamma Base and gives an ultimatum to make him supreme leader of the Earth. Hulk has to wear a mask because his face doesn't change this time, is defeated by MM, and taken into military custody. Brief rift between Rick and Hulk. Hulk defeats MM with a cardboard prop, redeeming himself again. MM leaves the planet. Hulk receives a pardon. The Gamma Ray Machine getting more and more unpredictable at story end. Title continues as #102 in 4/68. Hulk's solo storyline continues in TALES TO ASTONISH #60 in 10/64.

    "Trapped by the Carbon-Copy Man!" "The Midnight Caller" "I Am a Robot"

COM:    1st app. of the Xartans. Ugarth goes to Earth for one last conquest before turning the reins of power over to his son, Zano. Thor wants to reveal his love and secret ID to Jane, but is forbidden by Odin. Ugarth replaces key people in the city (including Jane and the Mayor) with duplicates and creates chaos. Thor investigates and discovers the Xartan spaceship, quickly defeats Zano and the rest of the crew. Beats an invisible Ugarth and throws him out into space and out of the solar system where the waiting armada follows him for a space rescue. Thor tricks Zano and the rest to turn themselves into harmless trees at story end. 2nd and 3rd features are non-MU fantasy stories. Cover by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers.

    "The Threat of the Torrid Twosome" "Man on the Scaffold" "Mystery of the Purple Planet"

On Zante's instigation, Johnny asks Reed for a salary, then quits the FF to join the Acrobat, who tricks him into a life of crime. Johnny figures the score eventually and Acrobat shoots him in the arm.     "Iron Man is Born!" "The Last Rocket!" "Gundar!"

In the jungle, Stark trips a booby trap, takes a piece of shrapnel dangerously close to his heart, and is captured by Wong Chu. Stark is forced to develop a new weapon with Yinsen. Stark develops armor which is also designed to keep his heart beating. Yinsen is killed . IM destroys Chu's compound and escapes at story end. 2nd and 3rd features are non-MU strange suspense stories. Cover by Don Heck and Jack Kirby.

    "Prisoner of the Slave World" "When the Beast Walks" "The Curse"

COM:    1st appearance of Slave World. The despot Kulla was besieged by enemies on his world and he used his technology to kidnap scientists from Earth to help him create his electro-death ray weapon. One of those kidnapped was Henry Pym, who became Ant-Man and easily escaped his cell. While trying to rescue his fellow scientists, he was spotted and Kulla himself chased after him. Unfortunately right in front of his own death ray and was killed. The fortress fell to what turned out to be a relatively peaceful race, and Ant-Man and the rest of the scientists were returned to Earth at story end. 2nd and 3rd features are non-MU strange suspense stories.     "The Fantastic Four Versus the Red Ghost and his Indescribable Super-Apes!"

COM:    1st app. of Limbo and Blue City (on the moon). Origin of Red Ghost and Super-Apes. Brief telling of Watcher's origin (expanded in ToS #53) Reed develops a new energy for rocket propulsion that will "enable us to catch up with the Reds in the race to the moon." FF travel to the moon, and Kragoff follows them with his trained apes, intentionally in an unshielded rocket, to gain powers from the cosmic rays they encounter. The Watcher witnesses the resultant fight, and it is established that his HQ is a storehouse of scientific marvels. At the end of the story, the Apes rebel on RG, the Watcher claims to be moving his base of operations further away from Earth (which he does not do), and the FF are on their way back home.

COM:    May gives Peter Ben's old miniature camera, Peter sells first photos to JJJ; Jameson revealed as publisher of Now Magazine. 1st app of the Vulture's hideout in a silo on Staten Island. Spidey creates his utility belt with a place for the camera and extra web fluid. Spidey uses "anti-magnet inverter" to shut down the Vulture's wings. He's captured by police, vows to get revenge at story end. In the 2nd feature, Peter works for Dr. Cobbwell over the weekend. 1st close-up of web shooter and how they work. Tinkerer assumed dead at story end. According to SSM #51, Mysterio appears in this issue, unnamed, as one of the "aliens". Flash mistakenly referred to as Moose. Last of the double features.

    "The Merciless Puppet Master"

COM:    1st mention of Namor trying to locate his missing people. Puppet Master takes control of Namor for first time. FF return home from the moon, they get mobbed by the press and fans. Sue mooning over Namor. It is revealed that PM survived the fall in FF1 #8 and is released from a sanitarium. He plans his revenge on the FF by using Namor. Under PM's control, Namor kidnaps Sue and challenges the rest of the team to come get her. FF travel underwater in a borrowed bathyscaphe and bring Alicia with them. FF battle Namor and again Sue steps in on his behalf. PM's sub captured by a giant octopus, freeing Namor from his control. Sue still wishy-washy about her emotional attachment between Reed and Namor. The whole team leaves amicably, but not trusting Namor. First appearance of Marvel's logo on the cover.

    "The Day that Loki Stole Thor's Magic Hammer" "The Man Who Hated Monstro!" "I Used to be Human"

COM:    Loki chained outside of Asgard, arranges Thor's hammer to smash his bonds. Thor goes to Asgard to seek it, uses several hand-made hammers to overcome Loki's traps. Finds Mjolnir, and Loki is taken back into custody at story end. 2nd and 3rd feature are non-MU fantasy stories. In the 2nd feature: Krumm, the star aerialist of the Forenci Circus, gets jealous of the newest attraction, the gorilla Monstro, and begins to torment the animal. In the end, he arranges for the animal's escape and consequent destruction only to meet the beast coming across the tenst on the opposite trapeze. In the 3rd feature: Cover by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers.

    "The Painter of a Thousand Perils!" "The Silent Giant" "The Iron Warrior"

Strange takes control of IM, gets him to break him out of prison. Strange goes for world domination for the sake of his daughter, setting up a fortress and threatening the world with S-bombs. Carla turns against her father, and IM beats him with the power of two flashlight batteries. Strange disappears by story end. 2nd and 3rd feature are non-MU strange suspense stories.     "The Mad Master of Time" "Frankie's Fast Ball" "My Fatal Mistake"

COM:    Weems was fired from his job because of his age, and, to get revenge, he created a ray that would rapidly age plants, animals, and people. He sent a ransom note to the police of Center City, demanding to be made its ruler or he would age the populace. Despite the efforts of Ant-Man, he started making good on his threat, until he accidentally aged his grandson. He recanted and returned everything to normal, and so impressed by his genius were Ant-Man and Weem's former employers that he not only didn't serve any jail time but he got his old job back at story end. 2nd and 3rd feature are non-MU strange suspense stories.     "The Fantastic Four Battle...the Mad Thinker and His Awesome Android!"

Reed becomes a research scientist for General Electronics. Ben starts wrestling, and Johnny joins his cousin's circus. They reunite to find MT had taken over their HQ. After defeating the Awesome Android, Reed outthinks MT and turns him over to the police at story end.

    "The Micro-World of Doctor Doom!"

Answering a distress call, the FF shrink to microscopic size to find Doom in control of Micro-World. Doom relates the events following the end of FF1 #10 and reveals he is at fault for their shrinking problems of late. Ant-Man follows them and together they defeat Doom, who returns to our world. Pearla offers to have Johnny stay, but he and the rest of the team use the enlarging ray at story end.

When they were finished, Blake became Thor to escape, but Zaxton duplicated him, and armed the bogus Thor with two copies of Mjolnir. Thor defeated the copy easily, and, when he went after the professor, Zaxton duplicated himself, but accidentally fell off a bridge, killing himself and destroying the machine. The duplicate turned out to be good instead of evil like the original, and Thor allowed him to continue on in Zaxton's life. 2nd and 3rd feature are non-MU fantasy stories. The New York Museum receives the sarcophagus of Merlin, and when they open it, he revives, and reveals that all of what was seen as magic a 1000 years ago was actually the result of his mutant powers. As an opening bid to take control of the government, Merlin teleports to Cape D'Or and disrupts the missile launch which is rescued by Thor. Thor suspects his half brother, but Loki is still in custody in Asgard (from #94), but gives him the low down on the ancient mage. Merlin, who goes to Washington, DC to lean on the president himself, finally attracts the attention of the thunder god, and he disrupts several DC landmarks before Thor, transforming back to Blake, convinces him that he's the most powerful magician. At story end, he forces the mage to return to his sarcophagus and fall back into his sleep spell. In the 2nd feature: A 1 page text story about Bill Swift which is concluded in the next issue. In the 3rd feature: A non-MU strange/suspense story of how the Gorgons of myth were actually invaders from space. when they send a recent scout ship to see if they can still turn men to stone, the test fails only because the chosen subjects were blind. In the 4th feature: A non-MU strange/suspense story about the industrialist Fenton, who uses all the resources of Fenton Electronics to build a time machine to go into the future to learn the secret of eternal life. But Ant-Man tricked him into playing a self hypnotic note which eliminated his memory of hypnosis and crime, and at story end, Trago goes back to being a musician. 2nd and 3rd features are non-MU strange suspense stories. Loki, who is still a captive in Asgard (from #94) decides to pit the Lava Man against his half brother while he's down, and various news papers pick up the progress (Star Bulletin, Metropolitan News, Chronicle Star, and News Ledger). As the lava Man nears the city, Jane springs that, because of his cowardice, she's leaving his practice to work for his rival, Andrews. Thor battles the Lava Man and in the end, drops him back into the volcano that spawned him and seals the crater. At story end, Jane stops to say goodbye and trample his manhood one last time. 2nd feature A 1 page text conclusion of the Bill Swift story from last issue. In the 3rd feature: A non-MU strange/suspense story of future Earth and its attempts to conquer the planet Delphinius. Origin of the Lizard, as told by Martha. Martha and Billy's names revealed in ASM #44. Spidey figures out an anti-dote by Dr. Connors' notes, makes web swamp shoes for the first time. Lizard shows that he can control other reptiles. Spidey administers anti-dote. Connors returns to family, burns his notes. JJJ thinks pictures that Peter took of the fight are fakes, tears them up. Both return to NY. Liz is in love with Spidey. The Vulture appears only in the last panel teaser.

    "The Avengers Battle....the Space Phantom"

Phantom comes to Earth and trades places with various members of the team, but mostly the Hulk, causing great conflict in their ranks. IM has sledgehammer attachment for his armor. Thor sends SP back to limbo, and Hulk leaves the team at story end.

    "The Mysterious Molecule Man!"

The Watcher sends for the FF, tips them off to the threat of MM, tells his origins. MM decides to take over, beats FF with his "molecular wand", puts a glass cage over NYC. FF helped by the Yancy Street Gang. Reed realizes that MM can't affect organic material, thwarts him by posing as statues. Watcher collects the defeated MM at the end of the story and leaves Reed with his wand.

    "Challenged by the Human Cobra!" "The Purple Planet" "Tales of Asgard: Odin Battles Ymir, King of the Giants"

Thor returns to NY; Jane returns to Blake, and Cobra gets away at the story end. 2nd feature is a non-MU fantasy story. In ToA: Origin of Odin continued. The Frost Giants attck Asgard and Odin, in his winged chariot, goes out to meet them. He bombards them with meteors and chops a fissure in the ground, consigning the survivors to the demons of Surtur, leaving only their king. Odin leads Ymir to a defunct volcano and at story end traps him in a ring of eternal fire. Cover by Jack Kirby and George Roussos.

    "The Human Torch Meets Captain America" "The Return of the Omnipotent Baron Mordo!"

The Acrobat poses as Captain America until the end of the story to get back at the Torch for events in ST #106. Last panel teaser to events in AV1 #4. In Dr. Strange's feature: Origin of Dr. Strange. Strange come to London, summoned by Mordo posing as his old friend, Bentley, and is trapped. Strange saved by his friend's daughter, Victoria, learns that Bentley is dead. Strange overcomes Mordo. Victoria asks to be Strange's disciple, but he tells her not yet at story end.

    "Iron Man Battles the Melter!" "Shock"

IM battles Melter for the first time, gets the left arm of his armor melted off. Production at SI falls off. IM tricks Melter by making a suit of armor out of aluminum.     "The Birth of Giant-Man!" "The End of a World"

COM:    Ant-Man I becomes Giant Man I. Giant Man/Wasp stories begin. Testing his new improved growth serum, Pym grows too large and smashes out of his lab and scares the socks off his gardener. After getting help to reduce to normal size by the Wasp, he realizes he shouldn't grow beyond 12 feet or he would be too big to support his own weight. Tests to see how much of his serum to use to put it into capsule form and gets it just right at story end. 2nd feature is a non-MU strange suspense story.

    "No One Can Stop the Vanisher!"

Prof. testing his students, revealed as a mutant, has a connection in the FBI (Agent Duncan). Vanisher steals top secret plans, and the X-Men are unable to stop his escape. Prof. X defeats the Vanisher by wiping his mind. He and his mob turned over to the military at story end.

    "Return of the Vulture"

COM:    Brief retelling of the end of ASM #2. Vulture invents new flying device and escapes prison. New improved costume. Spidey reuses the "inverter", and Vulture sets him up by pretending it worked again. Spidey falls and sprains his arm, nearly caught by May in costume, has to hang from the ceiling. Aunt May's last name confirmed. Dr. puts Peter's arm in a sling "for a few weeks". Vulture using his hideout in the Staten Island silo, decides to rob JJJ's office. Spidey stops him by webbing his wings together, webs JJJ's mouth shut for the first time. Peter and Betty very cozy at story end.

    "The Hate Monger!"

COM:    1st app. of Nick Fury set in contemporary times, last app. without his eye-patch. First Sgt. Fury cross-over. Origin of Hate Monger I. Reed discovers that tides all over the Earth are off their normal patterns. HM comes to NYC causing riots all over the city. FF investigates. HM turns them against one another using his "hate ray". Revealed that Fury is new with the CIA. Reed goes to San Gusto to investigate the unrest, and the others follow. Revealed that HM's hate ray gets its power from bouncing a beam off the moon. Reed gives the rest of the team an antidote to the hate ray. They defeat HM, discover that he's really Adolf Hitler (or a clone) and return home at story end.

    "The Mysterious Mr. Hyde!" "Stroom's Strange Solution" "Tales of Asgard: Surtur, the Fire Demon!"

COM:    Origin of Mr. Hyde. Thor petitions Odin to allow his marriage to Jane and is denied. Mr. Hyde wants revenge on Blake for refusing him a job months before. Thor asks to have Jane made an immortal and raises a hand to Odin when denied. Hyde tries to kill Blake, but Thor intercedes. Hyde switched his hate from Blake to Thor. At story end, it appears that Thor has robbed a bank. 2nd feature is a non-MU strange suspense story. In ToA: Finish the origin of Odin. 1st app. of Muspelheim, 1st full appearance of Surtur. Odin hears that the Trolls have sides with Surtur against him and Asgard, and, after dealing with the underground dwellers, he approaches the lair of the fire demon in the Sea of Fire. Surtur attacks him, and Odin calls down the cold of space to best him. Surtur flees to Earth, boring into the planet and dislodging a chunk that becomes the Moon; and Odin makes the Rainbow Bridge to follow the demon to Midgard, and, at story end, he begins the planet spinning, trapping the demon in the center.

    "Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandoes !" "Seven Against the Nazis"

COM:    1st app. of the Howlers. The 1st Wah-Hoo war cry. The leader of the French Underground is captured by the Nazis and The First Attack Squad of Able Company led by Fury are sent on the suicide mission to rescue him before they force him to spill his guts about D-Day. On the way to France, the Howlers' C-46 is shot up, and they hit the silk, but take the enemy planes out on the way down. In Part 2: The Howlers walk into the middle of a battle between the Underground and an outfit of Germans, and Fury takes out one of their tanks but is wounded in the process. They Molotov cocktail another tank, but get pinned down until they are rescued by the resistance led by Marie. Still in a bind, Dino dresses in the uniform of an ubergruppenfuehrer and makes the Germans retreat, and they use the same trick to free the hostage townspeople. They head for Castle Louviers where Henri is being questioned by direct order of Hitler, and sneak into the stronghold. All hell breaks loose, and the captured Howlers are freed by Fury, who they thought had died earlier. Father and daughter are reunited, and the Howlers use the General to get out of occupied France, and at story end, they leave Henri to continue his work and take the general with them back to England. Title is a non-timeline story set during WWII.

    "The Sandman Strikes!" "The Origin of Dr. Strange"

Becomes a drifter, ends up in India and becomes a reluctant student of the Ancient One to defend him and himself against Mordo. First mention of the Vishanti and Agamotto.

In his battle against Mr. Doll, Iron Man is outclassed in his bulky cumbersome armor, so much so that he nearly hangs it up as a costumed hero. Instead, he invents a lighter weight version of his armor, where each piece has its own built in power unit and connect together magnetically. The new suit has its main power batteries in the chest panel (sans the hip power pods) and still has the antenna on the shoulder, and the helmet has a flip-up face plate.   2nd and 3rd feature are non-MU strange suspense stories. FF go on vacation to investigate a sea monster sighting, take Alicia along. Namor captures the FF to use them as messengers to the UN to say "no more ships are allowed to trespass on his kingdom". Very brief retelling of FF1 #4. Atlantis invades NYC. Reed creates a devise to evaporate the water from their helmets. Dorma finds out Namor's feelings for Sue while he's battling the FF, and tries to drown her. Namor turns his back on Dorma and Atlantis to save Sue. Sue recovers, but Namor has been abandoned by his people at story end. 2nd feature is a picture gallery displaying an issue by issue listing of the villains the team has faced. 3rd feature is a reprinting of ASM #1. 4th feature is reprinted from FF #1, re-inked for more modern images of the characters.

COM:    First Spidey cross-over and team-up. Torch training in Glenville with the help of his sister, jealous of all the press Spidey is getting. The Fox steals a DaVinci painting and frames Spidey for it. Police on manhunt for Spidey, who tries to enlist the Torch to help clear him of the bogus charges, but, misunderstanding, Torch tries to subdue him. After an evenly matched fight, Spidey stops the Torch with webbing laced with silicone crystals. Torch figures out that Spidey's telling the truth and meets him for the first time on the top of the Statue of Liberty. They team-up to find the Fox, who had decided to skip town, and chase him through several of his hidden underground hideouts, eventually catching up to him in disguise in Central Park.
