Odin denies Thor's petition to make her an Immortal because of her interference in his subduing Hyde.  Thor cleared of charges of bank robbery.  Hyde gets away at the story end.  2nd feature is a non-MU fantasy story.  In ToA:  The Boyhood of Thor stories begin.  Thor and Loki follow two Storm Giants, who had stolen the Golden Apples of Idunn, back to their castle in hopes of winning them back.  Thanks to Loki, Thor is seen and attacked, but the god of lies saves him (and himself) by throwing wet leaves on the fire.  They find the Apples on the back of Agnar, on whom they escape.  At the story end, Thor gets the kudos (rewarded with extra strength to help wield the Uru hammer of Odin) because the All Father knows his boys better.  Cover by Jack Kirby and George Roussos.

:    In Torch's feature:  Fantastic Four appearance.  First Thing solo cross-over.  While he prepares a puppet of the Torch, Puppet Master recounts the events of how he escaped doom at the end of FF1 #14. he takes control of Johnny and send him romantically after Alicia, so Ben would get jealous and clobber him.  Their strong friendship keeps the fight from becoming fatal, so PM needs to increase his power by moving closer to the fight-at the same time Alicia figures who is behind all this.  At Idlewild Airport, where PM's last hideout is, she gets Johnny to drop a flaming blanket on her and her step dad, melting the puppet and breaking the spell.  At story end, Alicia gets Ben to let her step father go.  In Dr. Strange's feature:  First mention of Hoggoth.  Nightmare still seen mostly in shadow, creates a potion that enables him to bring people from the real world into his.  Strange travels to the "source of evil" in his Astral Form, does battle with Nightmare.  Strange tricks him with his amulet and rescues the three victims of his potion.  Cover by Jack Kirby and George Roussos.

:    Avengers and X-Men appearances.  1st X-Men X-over.  1st Avengers X-over.  On the way back to Westchester, Angel flies over Stark Industries and is caught in a blast of a refined nuclear detonation, and it turns his mind evil.  Iron Man tries to stop him, but when the Angel flies too high for his boot jets, he narrowly saves himself with his Magnetic Repeller.  Angel quits the X-Men and wants to join the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and Prof. X doubting the safety of continuing with his team, calls the Avengers for help.  Everyone else is busy except Tony, who stops the police, who are reacting to the Angel's TNT spree, and tries again to stop the teen.  As a last ditch effort, Iron Man repeats their first encounter but does nothing to save himself.  At the last moment, Angel comes out of it and rescues him, as planned.  At story end, Prof. X is reassured about what he is doing with the team is right and the X-Men offer their service to him any time.  In the 2nd feature:  A two page text story about a strange encounter in France.  In TotW:  Tales of the Watcher stories begin.  1st app. of the Sneepers.  Watcher tells a non-MU strange suspense story of the alien race who have been watching the Earth, coveting it as a potential conquest, but, because at the time, it was so primitive, they considered it below their effort to invade.  They watch as the human race progresses and when mankind reaches the atomic age, the Sneepers decide it's only a matter of time before man conquers himself, and so continue to watch and wait.  Cover by Jack Kirby and Sol Brodsky.

:    Avengers appearance (w/o Cap). Thor on rampage to see Odin after he refused to make Jane an Immortal.  Loki restores Zarkko's memeory of his last meeting with Thor (JiMI #86).  At the story end, Thor agrees to return with Zarkko to the 23rd century to save 20th century Earth from his robot.  2nd feature is a non-MU fantasy story.  In ToA:  The Boyhood of Thor Pt. 2.  Evil forces are approaching Asgard, and Thor, eager to do noble deeds, is tricked by Loki into protecting a hole in their defenses which he made and tipped off to the bad guys.  The youthful godling faces most of their worst enemies (including a witch, a Troll, two wolf gods, a dragon, the last Ice Giants and two Rime Giants) and does his best, but gets changed into a tree just before the cavalry arrives.  The villains are routed, and, at story end, Thor is able to life the hammer of Odin a bit higher still.

'54.   Bucky and Zemo appear only in the WWII flashback.  Cap and Rick team-up to save the Avengers from an unnamed alien who can turn people to stone (1st app. of the D'Bari-unnamed).  The team helps the alien recover his ship and they run afoul of Namor again, who has armed Atlantean force with him this time.  Namor leaves the team to die when the island breaks up.  Cap voted in as a member.  Rick worried what the Hulk will think when he finds out that he's been replaced by Cap.  1st modern app. of Cap's motorcycle

The Boyhood of Thor Pt 3.  Thor visits the three Fates (Norns) to find whether he will ever be rewarded his father's Uru hammer, and they tell him only after he has faced death.  He returns to the golden city to find the Storm Giants have kidnapped Sif, and, without thinking, he takes the hammer to get her back.  He finds that Rugga has given her to Hela in trade for her to make him immortal, and Thor offers his life for that of the girl.  Hela can't bring herself to take such a noble life, and so, at the end of the story, Thor gains full possession of his hammer.  Hela, Sif, and Balder very different from their later appearances.  Cover by Jack Kirby and George Roussos

COM:    The Howlers training hard for the 'big push', and Strucker gets orders from Hitler to best Fury in combat.  The Baron issues a challenge, which Sawyer makes Fury refuse, but Fury, after meeting Pam for a date at Ye Royale Dragoon,  sneaks across enemy lines anyway.  Strucker and Fury fight a sword duel, but, because Fury has been secretly drugged, the Baron wins.  The report is in all the papers, and Sam busts Fury down to private.  the big push comes and the Howlers capture a German mobile howitzer and use it to blow up a rocket base in Dortstadt.  The base happens to be part of Strucker's command, and Nick gets a rematch, fair and with fists this time.  Nick beats him; Dugan gets pictures, and a B-36 takes them home.  At story end, Fury is restored to the rank of Sergeant deep to Sawyer's regret.  Title is a WWII combat action storyline.  Cover by Jack Kirby and John Severin.

COM:   Some distinctly crappy things happen in the life of the Torch (including being left behind from the family vacation, getting kicked off the football team, and getting jilted by Dorrie) and the Rabble Rouser uses his natural temper and disregard for rules to convince the public that he's a menace, even getting his flame powers banned by the city.  After the Torch is defamed, RR turns his attention to another threat to his Red friends, Prince Nagamo, who is set to visit the city.  Using a modified version of the Sub-Surface vehicle (mentioned in FF1 #21) he kidnaps the prince, and the Mayor gives Johnny permission to flame on and follow.  In an abandoned subway tunnel, Toch beasts RR with a little help from the Prince, and hypnotizes him with his own Mesmerizer Wand to be a loyal American.  At story end, the ban is lifted, and Torch is informed that Dorrie was just trying to make him jealous.  In Dr. Strange's feature:  Wong named for the 1st time.  Two thieves enter the Sanctum Sanctorum and try to steal a gem that is a gateway to the Purple Dimension (1st app.). Strange follows them and agrees to take their place as Aggamon's captive.  Strange defeats him and is freed to return to his own dimension.  At story end, the two crooks have turned themselves over to the police.  Cover by Jack Kirby and George Roussos.

   Santo Rico unwittingly elects El Toro as their leader, and he immediately turns the democratic nation into a repressive police state.  The US State Department asks GM and Wasp to investigate, and they go down posing as tourists, but they are quickly recognized.  Wasp is captured, and GM is stunned by a surprise attack and left at 12 feet tall in enemy territory, but manages to free his partner.  GM fights and defeats El Toro, who isn't much of a fighter, and the Wasp finds proof that the election had been rigged by his communist masters.   At story end, the populace overthrows El Toro's regime, and Hank and Jan are home again.  2nd feature:  Is a 1 page text story about Tommy Miller and his wishing dog, continued next ish.  3rd feature:  A non-MU strange suspense story of art swindler, Victor Conrad, who sells expensive paintings to his marks (like Mr. Smythe) and then steals them back again.  he skips to Europe and sees a painting in a small shop that he must have.  When the proprietor refuses to sell, he returns that night and steals it.  One he gets it home, he gets absorbed into the picture making it 'six frightened men'.  In TotW:  Wasp tells Tommy, the sick son of a friend, a non-MU bedtime story about King Shann, who, to win the failing respect of his people stages an invasion on the planet Andromia.  When they end up supporting the conquered and ruined people, their taxes skyrocket and they end up hating their king.  Cover by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers.

:    Teen Brigade appearance.  1st app. of Lava Men.  Hulk leaves the team.  After the events in FF1 #26, the team temporarily disbands.  After several disasters attributed to a strange, ultra-sonic sound, the team reunites, and they fly to the south west to the sound's origin.  A huge rock pushes up through the ground near Gamma Base which turns out to be the Living Rock forced to the surface by the Lava Men.  Molto tries to stop them, but he is forced down by Jinku.  The Avengers try to stop them, overcoming the first rush of Lava Men, and destroy the Living Rock when they trick Hulk into punching it, causing it to implode.  Thor warns the Lava men back and seals their access to the surface.  Betty finds Bruce, who had changed back after the blast, out in the desert.  at story end, ready to return home, the team gets a "condition red" alert from the Teen Brigade.

:    First Dr. Strange cross-over.  Reed invents a thought projector.  Namor still has the hots for Sue, attacks the Baxter Building to get in to see her.  He declares his love for her again, and when she turns him down, he kidnaps her.  The boys enlist Strange's aid to find her, then use pills that allow them to breathe underwater for sixty minutes.  Namor and Reed at each other's throats.  Sue stops the fight, chooses Reed over Namor.  To prevent further bloodshed, Strange separates the two parties at that moment.  At story end, Reed has doubts as to whether what Sue declared was true or not.

:  Avengers appearance.  Blake decides to give up being Thor for the sake of his forbidden love for Jane, and seals his cane in a closet, but Cobra and Hyde team-up against discover a connection between Thor and Dr. Blake, and try to force the doctor to give up his friend.  Blake tricks them into stamping his cane on the floor and becomes Thor, but the pair escape.  Thor follows them to the Advanced Machine Exhibit,  And at story end, he loses Mjolnir in the jaws of the GrapplerIn ToA:  Heimdall's origin part 2.  1st app. of the Vanna.  Brimmer looking to attack Asgard, but deems it impossible because of Heimdall.  Nedra sends a Vanna to sneak past him to scout Asgard's defenses.  Ever vigilant Heimdall sounds the alarm even though he was unable to actually hear or see the air sprite, and Odin catches it at his war council.  At story end, Odin praises him for his accomplishment, and tells him that he holds a place in his heart second only to Thor before his war party rides off toward Jotunheim.

COM:    At a society party thrown by Stuyvesant, the performing Magician took it in his head to rob the guests.  Among them was Janet van Dyne, and as the Wasp she attempted to stop him and not only failed but was captured herself.  Unable to locate the Magician, GM set a trap by throwing another party, this time on the yacht, Neptune.  Magician couldn't resist; and GM freed his partner, and they captured the crook together at story end.  In TotW, Wasp tricks Hank into a date by telling him a non-MU riddle of how Lorenzo won the hand of the princess on a distant planet from the evil Maximus.  Cover by Jack Kirby and Sol Brodsky.

Title becomes monthly.

:    In Thor's feature:   At the Advanced Machine Exhibit, Thor's hammer is trapped somewhere inside the Grappler and he has only sixty seconds to retrieve it.  Retelling of events from last ish.  Unable to get at his hammer, Thor disappears into the crowd to become Blake, strikes a deal with Cobra and Hyde to turn over Thor if they fetch his cane from the machine.  They do, and Blake becomes Thor and captures Cobra.  Hyde becomes Zabo and escapes to follow Thor and tackle him solo.  Thor doesn't have much trouble with him alone and deposits him unceremoniously at the nearest police precinct.  At story end, Jane angry at Blake for being cowardly enough to give Thor up to save his own life.  In ToA:  Origin of Balder.  Because Balder stopped to help a bird back in its next rather than pursuing the retreating Storm Giants with his comrades, his courage come into question, and Odin orders a Test of Mortal Death.  Over and over the best weapons men in Asgard reluctantly tried to kill Balder, and he stood unflinchingly as each was mysteriously deflected.  At story end, he passes the test and is granted immortality, and for years to come Balder will be proof that the bravest can be the gentlest.

:    Origin of Kang.  Teen Brigade appearance.  The team is called in for an emergency meeting by the Pentagon and shown footage of Kang's arrival, and sent to Virginia to confront him.  Team gets their butt's whipped by Kang's advanced technology, including his Anti Matter Shield, until the Under Secretary arrives to treat with Kang.  Revealed that Kang is also Rama-Tut and that he intends to rule the 20th century.  Team takes another shot at him and Thor, GM, And IM are captured.  Rick and Wasp go to get help.  Teen Brigade infiltrates Kang's ship by pretending to side with him, release the others.  Wasp returns with a weapon developed by Stark and GM.  They get the better of Kang and he releases a Neutrino Missile, which is deflected by IM and explodes harmlessly in the sub-atmosphere.  As a last resort, Kang emits huge amounts of radiation, which Thor turns back on him.  Fearing he might reach critical mass, Kang escapes in his ship and disappears at story end.

:   Avengers appearance.  Thor saves a boy from being run over by a runaway cement truck, then he receives a mental summons to help the wounded Dr. Strange.  While operating on the Sorcerer Supreme, Odin summons his son to battle in defense of Asgard, but Blake has to ignore him, ticking his dad off.  While Odin is out of Asgard, Loki sneaks past Heimdall.  The operation successful, Strange offers Blake a boon out of gratitude, and Blake, back at this office, gets tricked by a disguised Loki and looses his cane and his nurse.  Blake petitions his father for help and gets no answer, so collects the debt from Strange.  He regains his cane, becomes Thor, and goes looking for Jane just as Odin contacts him again.  Thor brushes his dad off again, and the Avengers who offered their help, and, using his hammer to locate the aura of another immortal, locates his half brother.  Loki doesn't stand a chance, so he decides to take it out on Jane (hidden in Limbo), but Strange intervenes again.  By story end, Jane is safe, Loki is back in custody, and both father and son are reconciled.  In ToA:  Thor frees Asgardian slaves from the kingdom of the Trolls. :    Origin of Hawkeye.  Trying to help Happy, Tony ends up on a date with Pepper, and at Coney Island, where Iron Man rescues some people on the Flying Pinwheel, the sideshow marksman becomes jealous.  he goes home and creates a costume and special arrows and tries to thwart a bank robbery, only to get blamed himself.  Widow latches onto him, helps him create even more spectacular arrows, and pits him against Iron Man.  While pepper agrees to go on a date with Happy to make Tony jealous, Hawk sneaks into SI and uses an explosive arrow to get Iron Man's attention.  He uses rust arrows on the golden avenger, and Iron Man has to trade the affected armor for spares.  1st appearance of his replacement armor.  Hawk absconds with the discarded pieces, and Iron Man catches up with him at the docks.  Hawk uses a demolition arrow, but part of the blast ricochets and hits Widow.  Hawk, declaring his love for her, gets her to her waiting boat and disappears, and, at story end, Iron Man losses them because he can't fly so near the airport in the fog.  In the 2nd feature:  A 1 page text story about the new kid in town joining a local baseball team continued next issue.    In TotW:  1st app. of the Ravaks.  Space pirates come to plunder planet T-37X, and, knowing the Watchers' pledge of non interference, they set up their Delta Cannon right in front of him .  he, however, melts the cannon, reverses their physical and chemical make up and transport them to the butt end of the galaxy where they can do no harm.  At story end, it's revealed that T-37X is the Watchers' home planet.

:    Hulk's 1st app. in TtA.  Avengers appearance.  Giant Man, who can now change his size mentally, has been watching footage of Spider-Man's battle with the Hulk (ASM #14) and decides to go to New Mexico to find their old team mate.  Human Top, who has been brooding about their last encounter (TtA1 #55) sees an opportunity for revenge and, sans costume and with his new Speed Blast, he follows them. Hank and Jan inquire at the Los Diablos Missile Base, and Banner goes out to confront them as the Hulk.  Hank uses his Miniature Carbon Dioxide Power Rocket for the first time.  Top tries to team up with the Hulk, but settles for siccing him on his old enemies, and then sics Ross on him.  While Hank and Hulk duke it out, the army lobs a nuclear warhead into the evacuated town, but Hulk catches it, not caring whether he lives or dies, and redirects it into the hills where the Top has been hiding.  At story end, Banner comes home safe, and Hank and Jan give up their search and go home.  In 2nd feature:  a 5 page story explaining mostly the abilities of Giant Man and close-ups of the duo's gadgets, including Jan's new Wasp Sting.  Also a detailed schematic of Hank Pym's HQ in lower Manhattan.  Included in the book is a 1 page special announcement that the Hulk will begin as the regular second feature starting next month.  Cover by Jack Kirby and Sol Brodsky.

    1st appearance of Egghead's Android.  While Hank and Jan are entertaining some hospitalized children, Egghead escapes prison, starts to work perfecting his Living-Cell Beam, then, using his Vibration Ray, he breaks into a clothing store and steal a mannequin for a full size version.  He applies a special clay-like substance to bulk up the body, and then bathes it in his Ultra-Beta Beam making it grow and bathes himself to give him full control.  Next day, Hank and Jan return him in the new Converti-Car to find an invitation for them to star in their own television series, but the invite turns out to be a death trap.  Giant Man battles the Android, controlled by the Beta-Ray Mental Energy Transmitter, but it's mass keeps changing and his attempts turn into fumbles.  Finally, as their air is expiring, Giant Man spins the Android around and around making Egghead so dizzy in proxy that he agrees to release them to make it stop.  At story end, the Android walks off a pier and Egghead is waiting for the police to arrive.  In Hulk's feature:  Brief replay of Hulk's fight with the robot last issue.  Ross tries to pair up Talbot and Betty.  Robot finds one of Banner's hidden labs and builds a missile.  Hulk knocks robot into bottomless pit, stops the missile and is knocked unconscious by the blast.  Hulk is captured after he's found by Talbot.  Betty questions her love for Bruce.  Cover by Jack Kirby and Sol Brodsky.

:    New Wasp costume.  In Hulk's feature:  Revealed that the Agent who stole the robot in TtA #60 was working for the Leader.  Rick travels back west to help the Hulk, ends up next to a disguised Chameleon, who is also working for the Leader.  Hulk changes back to Banner and slips out of his bonds.  The Chameleon impersonates Gen. Ross, then as Banner he steals a 'gamma grenade'.  Talbot learns early on to dislike Banner.  The Chameleon is foiled by the Hulk.  Leader decides to take a personal hand with his new "Humanoid" creature.  Leader's actual full appearance seen in next issue.  Cover by Jack Kirby and Chic Stone.

:    Origins of Doctor Doom, Mr. Fantastic, & the Thing.  Death of Werner and the Baroness in flashback.  1st app. of the creation of Doom's armor by the Tibetan monks.  First mention of Cynthia Von Doom.  Doom and his father in exile; his father dies and he is raised by Boris.  Learns his mother is a witch and learns her secrets, sets himself up as the local huckster. Gets a full scholarship in America, meets Reed Richards, blows himself up trying to contact his dead mother.  Goes to Tibet, gets fitted for his armor, sealed in with uncooled face mask.  Doom becomes leader of  Latveria.  2nd feature is a six page continuation from An #1 giving an issue by issue listing of the villains the FF has encountered. 3rd story is a reprint of FF1 #5.  In the 4th feature, it is explained what happened to Doom after FF1 #23.  Rama Tut saves Doom from space.  1st question whether Doom and Rama Tut are the same person from two different times.  Doom and RT team-up against the FF.  FF get invited to the Latverian embassy to receive a scientific fellowship.  Doom turns the team against each other using holographic duplicates, but his vanity puts a monkey wrench into the whole affair, battles the FF to a stand still.  Reed and Doom duel with the Encephelo-Gun.  Reed lets Doom believe he won at story end.
