COM:    1st appearance of Sentinel Mark III-V.  Blob, Unus and Lorelei arrive at the Champions Building looking for sanctuary, and they are followed closely by three Sentinels who burst in through the wall an don't seem to have any problem going after humans as well as mutants.  Widow activates the Champsignal, and Angel goes to fetch the other members of the group.   After a tussle with some locals, they storm their HQ and join the fray, and after freeing their friends and wrecking the Sentinels, they press for answers from Unus, who tells how they were changed back to adult (after DEF #16) and after Magneto took a powder, how they had decided to give up the super villain shtick.   No one buys their story, so Vanisher steps out of the shadows and tells how he found the Mark III robots after UXM #100 and bent them to his will in his plan to get at the X-Men.  Vanisher decides to use their deaths to lure his old enemies to him, but Darkstar uses the Darkforce to animate one of the Sentinels and takes out the three red herrings. Alone, Vanisher tries to teleport away, but Lanya uses her powers against an catches him half way in and out.  At story end, they're not sure if he survived the shock.  Final issue.  Cover by Ernie Chan.

COM:    Origin of Red Guardian II.  Namor and the team are battling Presence and RG, and Sergei is slaughtering Namor's people. Hawk, looking for some weapon to use, finds the Horn of the Ancient Atlanteans and accidentally summons a monster from the deep.  On top of fighting the bad guys, they are now having to deal with the monster, and while RG is facing Hellcat, she relates her past, how she replaced the failed original RG.  She ends up saving Tania from the monster, just before Presence releases enough radiation to kill it (also changing Hulk back to Banner).  When he's about to do the same to the decimated heroes, RG steps in and puts herself between them and him.  She hits him with the you never really loved me shtick and he slinks away.  However, there is no victory, because, at story end, it is discovered that they are all displaying symptoms of advanced radiation poisoning.  In the Epilog, Ledge is trying to make time with Barbara, and Lunatik arrives seeking revenge.  She changes to Val in front of both of them and prepares for battle.  Cover by Gil Kane and Joe Sinnott.

    "The Pyramid"

COM:    Celestials appearance.  Druig is seeking the weapon that was used to kill a Celestial during the Second Host, and travels in an Ice Runner to the Pyramid of the Winds where he has discovered that Valkin has hidden it.  Ikaris escapes, and he and the wizard follow, and, before Druig can use the device, his cousin melts it with his disintegrator beams, causing a backlash that kills the villain, destroys the Pyramid, and begins to cause a catastrophic meltdown.  At story end, Ziran, with little effort, stops the inferno.   Final issue.

COM:    Spidey, Razorback, and Flash are chained up on the Croton-on-the-Hudson estate about to be blown up by a bomb that is gong t o be blamed on them, but Buck is able to summon his truck via remote control and they escape the blast that destroys the house.  At the Yonkers Coliseum, the bad guys prepare for the big push for recruitment, and the good guys arrive, and, after clashing with some cult priests, come face to face with HM.  He uses his power and turns Spidey and Razorback against each other, while Flash, dressed as one of the faithful, manages to smuggle Bobby Sue down stairs.  He tackles and unmasks HM, breaking his spell on the others, and he's revealed to be Man-Beast at story end.

COM:    Val clashing with Lunatik, and Ledge gets bashed when he tries to help.  The rest of the team on a deserted Russian beach suffering from terminal radiation poisoning (from last ish), and Banner, with the help of the US State Department gets the Soviet Government to allow him to help them.  Val trying to take down the criminal vigilante who is rampaging through the street, but he changes bodies and escaped into the crowd.  Banner almost loses Patsy, but he manages to save them all before collapsing from exhaustion; then the team gets a pass to go home after some more finagling from the State Dept.  At story end, Lunatik makes one more pass at Val and then disappears up a train tunnel.

COM:    GR, in the desert after leaving the Cheery-O's Dude Ranch) loses concentration on his bike and has a nasty accident, and Johnny thumbs a ride into the next small town.  Roxy looking for Johnny, and Bill not only doesn't help but hits on her in a big way.  Johnny buys another bike from Swifty's Cycle Shop, and, before Roxy can say anything when she sees him test riding it, her memory gets wiped by the Orb.  Johnny buys the bike and provisions and moves on toward the next town when he can't contact Roxy by phone, and Bill follows knowing there's trouble brewing.  Orb pits a motorcycle gang against him, and while they're dragging him across the desert behind their bikes, Bill comes to the rescue.  GR takes down the Orb and uses hi Hell-fire on him, and the gang hauls off his quivering mass, leaving his helmet behind.  At story end, Johnny and Bill part company, and Bill goes back to town and insinuates him into Roxy's amnesiac life.  Cover by Ernie Chan.

COM:    Death of Brother Power.  Man-Beast takes out Spidey, Razorback, and Flash, and relates to the barely conscious web slinger how he regained him humanoid form and how he came to be on Earth and heading up this cult.  Man-Beast then prepares his Hate Amplifier to convert his loyal disciples to his army and used the images of Spidey and crew as their sworn enemies to solid the deal.  The good guys escape, but the fanatics are ready to kill them all as HM cranks up his machine.  Just as everything seems hopeless, Sha-Shan makes her move and defies her master and husband.  Spidey and Flash get in at MB, and while they are fighting, his control is broken.  Spidey socks him into his machine, causing it to explode and presumably kills its maker, and up on stage the resultant explosion kills Brother Power.  At story end, Flash saves Sha-Shan, Razorback is reunited with his sister (she decides to stay in the city rather than go home with him), and the Legion of Light cult is disbanded.

All of the characters between the [ ] appear only in flashback or in the alternate reality.  Retellings of Spidey's origin where first Flash is bitten and becomes a costumed hero, but is eventually killed while fighting the Vulture (AF #15 and ASM #2).   Second, Betty is bitten and enlists Peter's help to become a costumed hero, but she gives up the costume after the death of Peter's Uncle Ben (AF #15).  Third, John is bitten, and his Dad hypes him as the super astronaut, but he is killed trying to rescue an out of control space capsule (ASM #1).  Last is the conclusion to all three, where Peter synthesizes the spider venom and becomes Spidey himself.  Gil Kane cover.

Chasin named.  The X-Men return to the X-Mansion triumphantly (after saving the universe) and while Storm visits her plants in her attic atrium (1st appearance), 'Jean' remembers back to the Shi'ar High Chamberlain explaining that it might be some time before Lilandra could be installed as the empress, and Corsair asking her not to reveal his real ID to Scott, and then takes the time to reveal her true nature to her parents.  While the others prepare for a picnic, Scott brooding about the change in 'Jean' and he and Kurt have a heart to heart before the elf heads off for a date with Amanda.  Wolverine goes out to play tag with the local fauna, and he is attacked by Weapon Alpha.  The fight carries over into the picnic and Moira is wounded by a stray ricochet.  Banshee goes wild and attacks him, and Hudson is forced to retreat.  At story end, Wolverine lets the others know that the man and he are like brothers and that the trouble is only just starting.  Cover by Dave Cockrum and Terry Austin.

COM:    AIM appearance.  A few months back, Hulk is tearing up the Sanctum chasing an image of Ms. Marvel, and Strange must intervene but cant unravel the mystery.  Currently, Barnett, also haunted by Carol, is taken captive by Shaman, and Marvel comes to the Defenders for help.  AIM tries to plumb Marvel's secrets by using their Psycho-Conditioner on her psychiatrist, and they uncover her fear of being slain by the Hulk.  Setting their plan in motion they send the Warbot to attack the Sanctum and capture the Hulk.  Hawk locates their hideout in Suffolk county, and the rest of the team breaks in.  Marvel dispatches the Warbot, and while the bucket heads are fleeing, Hellcat takes down Shaman.  They mop up the rest of the nest, and by story end have freed both the Hulk and Barnett.  Kurt Busiek letter.

COM:    Spidey witnesses a police officer running down some counterfeiters, and lends a hand.  The cop is branded a hero, and Peter is sent to get pictures of he and his wife, but comes in the middle of some domestic strife.  Beetle plans to get the money back, and sets up an elaborate series of crimes to leave the police station easy pickings for himself.  Beetle breaks into the evidence room to get the briefcase, and Spidey arrives to stop him.  While Spidey gets pummeled, Joey, who had promised his wife to stay out of danger, can't sit still any longer.  He uses a heroin stash to make a paste and with Spidey's help, gums up Beetles suction fingers.  Spidey beats the bad guy, but Macone didn't fair so well.  Some time later, after he begins to knit from his injuries, his superiors raise him to the rank of detective at a ceremony, which, at story end, his wife walks away from.

COM:    Moira  is leaving NY and the team holds a baseball game to celebrate, but it soon degenerates with more and more power use  Moira goes to answer the door for the man from the phone company, and gets rendered unconscious by Warhawk, who proceeds, at Black King's orders (behind the scenes), to infiltrate the X-Men computer system.  He manages to turn the Danger Room against the team, and the only two that could stop it, Phoenix and Prof. X, are also rendered unconscious.  While the rest of the team are getting creamed, Kurt teleports out with Wolverine, but he's so weakened by the ordeal of Bamfing for the first time that he's no match for Warhawk.  As they are fighting, he reveals that his orders were to observe the X-Men in their ordeal, not kill them, but when he faces the whole team finally, he decides to use his failsafe, a toxic gas bomb.  However, Kurt gets to it first and Colossus puts him down for the count.  They hand him over to the police, but Xavier is worried that they now face an unknown foe who knows too much about them already.  At story end, the general consensus from the team is to bring them on.  Somewhere between this issue and the next, Prof. X and Lilandra go on vacation.  Cover by Dave Cockrum and Terry Austin.

COM:    Agents of Fortune Cult appearance.  1st appearance of the Chained Ones.  Devil-Slayer joins the team.  Slayer has brought Val and Hulk to the Demon Realm, thinking they're in league with the Cult, but after Val clears things up, and the Ort-Beast is dealt with, they return to the Sanctum as allies.  In Mexico, at their dark retreat, Vera, revealed to be the leader of the Cult, uses the power of the Eye to summon forth the first of the Chained Ones.  Strange explains what they are doing to the others, and they form an alliance with Slayer to stop them, while back at the ranch, Hellcat gets her first taste of the Lola MK 1.  She and Hawk make use of his new Murder Machine, and when things get out of hand, they are rescued by the rest of the team come to collect them.  While in the Soviet Union, two scientists are worried about RG who has been kept in captivity since the Presence affair.  With Slayer's help, Strange sends his astral form to locate the Eye, but he is discovered by Vera (in her demon form) and is melded to another demon.  Slayer follows after him via is Cloak and runs afoul of Reaper, and the rest of the team returns to the Sanctum only to find Dollar who informs them that the Doc is dead at story end.

COM:    Iceman, still under the control of Clarke, is trying to kill Spidey and Angel.  Angel spills how Clarke had taken control of Bobby from his hospital bed and put him in his old armor and began to extort money from him as revenge for what he believed the team did to him (CHM #8).  While Spidey and Angel are doing their best not to hurt their mutual friend, Angel gets sidetracked by some lawyers representing the construction company responsible for the Champions Building.  Spidey shakes Iceman out of his dementia by running him through a hot carwash, and Angel runs the lawyer out on a rail after they agree to take care of the faulty construction.  Clarke is returned to the hospital, and Spidey realizes that his camera was damaged in the fight, so he has not pictures.  Back at ESU, Sha-Shan is taking classes; she and Flash are getting on like gang busters, and Hector meets Holly.  While returning to the east coast, Peter's plane is rerouted to Albany, and he witnesses the escape of Lightmaster from Attica. COM:    Agents of Fortune Cult and Chained Ones appearance.  The team takes Strange's body and head off for Mexico to reunite it with his astral form, while at the dark retreat, Vera has ushered the Chained Ones back into this world and has fed her faithful followers to them.  The team is attacked by US fighter planes, ordered to destroy them by Belathauzer (who has been placed as commander of the Air Force base), and, even though Hulk downs the fighters, they are forced to bail out of their damaged craft (all under the lens of Dollar).  While Slayer is dealing with Reaper and the hordes of demons, Vera is busy cheating the demon lords out of their power as revenge.  The team encounters Strange, bonded to a demon, and while Hellcat and Hulk forge ahead to assist Slayer, the rest are able to restore the mage to his mortal body.  Hellcat takes out Reaper and takes his Shadow Cloak, while Strange and Hawk hatch a plan to recover the Eye of Agamotto.  Things aren't going well for the other heroes until Hellcat gets the bright idea to teleport Vera away with the Cloak, and, at almost the same time, Strange, having recovered the Eye, reverses the spell which brought the demons forth and sends them back from whence they came at story end.  Cover by Ed Hannigan and Alan Weiss.

COM:    At Dormammu's instigation, GR has attacked Strange in his Sanctorum, while police, firemen, and reporters gather outside the building.  Strange, caught off guard, regains his wits and calling on the Faltine, Umar, and the Vishanti sends GR to Hades, but GR climbs out of the abyss and continues the assault.  Clea rushes home to aid her lover and is just in time to save him from a killing blow by GR, and her uncle prepares to take her down as well.  In another part of the city, two policemen encounter the Bounty Hunter who is looking for Blaze.  Strange enters the mind of GR to stop him, and finding Blaze trapped there, learns GR's origin.  Dormammu enters GR's mind as well, and to save Johnny from the fight that ensues, he ejects him.  Outside Strange seems to recover to face GR, but at story end, it's revealed that Johnny is in Strange's body.  Cover by Ernie Chan.

COM:    Enforcers appearance, the new Ox joins the team.  Dan and Montana are practicing on a Spider-Man dummy when their new boss, who sprang them from jail (following events in MTU #40) introduces them to their newest member, the brother of their deceased member, and sends them after Spidey.  Peter faces the heat from JJJ after losing the photos of his trip to LA, and Flash and Sha-Shan and Hector and Holly are getting along famously at the Coffee Bean when the place is invaded by the Enforcers, who are looking to flush out their prey.  Spidey gets into the act and quickly takes the Enforcers apart, while Hector watches, deep to the dismay of Ms. Hollis.  At story end, Hector comes out to give the police the all's clear, and Lightmaster, from his hideout at the Light Inc. building, assumes he must be Spidey.  The letters page contains an article written by John Roe of the Wichita Eagle concerning a Spidey strip directed at them for dropping their feature.

COM:    After finding the X-Mansion vacant, Beast, using Cerebro, arrives at Mr. Mike's One-Ring Traveling Tent Show in Sullivan County, Tx., and finds who he believes to be the X-Men as part of the side show, and have no memory of him or the team.  When he investigates further, he gets captured right at the feet of the Beast-Man, who begins to shake off his brain washing.  Beast discovers that Mesmero is behind all of this, and that he is doing it out of revenge for what the team did to him years before (UXM #52).  While Mesmero tries to take over Beast's mind, Wolverine breaks free and manages to shake everyone else out of their ague.   When the whole team has gathered and is ready to face down the villain, he collapses, and in a chair behind him is none other than Magneto, who is ready for a rematch at story end.  In the audience but not identified are Ethan and Elizabeth Wilford.  Cover by Dave Cockrum and Terry Austin.

COM:    Enforcers appearance.  Spidey eavesdropping at the Metropolitan Police Station while D'Angelo interrogates the Enforcers.  Ox nearly breaks out through the Maxi-Glass partition, but is gassed into submission.  Spidey returns home to find his sky light leaking and the wet plaster collapses getting him in Dutch with his land lady.  Lightmaster reveals that he's no longer human but composed of unstable light before going out to kidnap Hector, whom he believes to be Spidey.  Peter, who has a cold from the rain the night before, fails to stop the abduction, but does find Hector's amulet before giving chase.  He follows them to the Light Inc. building where Lightmaster is televising his interrogation of Hector, and he sneaks him the amulet.  Hector becomes the Tiger on national TV (to the dismay of Holly), and the two heroes tag team on Lightmaster.  But, just as the villain almost has his revenge on Spidey, there is a city wide black out.  Without the light, he can't maintain his physical form, and at story end, dissolves to nothing and is assumed deceased.  Ernie Chan cover.

COM:    Richmond Riding Academy (Defenders HQ) first named.  While the team is taking advantage of a little down time, Dollar springs the documentary he's been making about them when it is presented on TV.  At the end of the program (which doesn't show them in a favorable light), he announces that the team is currently holding open auditions for new members, and Hawk is ticked knowing what will happen.  The next day, they're swamped with applicants, who, despite being ordered off the property, strut their stuff to try and outshine the others.  A small splinter group even decides to elect a new leader of the team, Herc, and they decide the first order of business should be to attend to the Hulk.  And while fur is ruffled all over the grounds, the splinter group jumps the uncustomarily thoughtful Hulk at story end.  Cover by John Romita Jr. and Bob Layton.  Spider-Woman I, Angel, Power-Man II, Human Torch II, and Iron-Man I shown on cover only.

COM:    In the opening of the story, Dormammu and Strange are battling in GR's body and Blaze is in Strange's.  GR's body is trying to kill Johnny, and would have succeeded if Johnny didn't start using his dukes.  With the extra interference, Strange is able to drive Dormammu out of GR's body and back to the Dark Dimension, and everyone goes back to their own body in time to witness the arrival of the Bounty Hunter, who has come for Johnny.  GR races away and BH gives chase on his demon stallion through the streets of NYC.  GR almost gets away, rocketing up the side of a building at 300 mph, but BH catches him with some Hell-fire, changing him back to Johnny, who crashes back to the ground.  At story end, BH prepares to collect the unconscious stunt cyclist's soul.

Ortiz.  They reach his Antarctic Base and the team makes a last ditch effort to escape but are eventually subdued and placed into restraining chairs that are plugged into their central nervous systems.  Not only does it inhibit them from using their powers, but skews every movement and sound.  At story end, he leaves them in the hands of Nanny, his prisoners for life as little more than infants as he was once left.  Title goes monthly.  Cover by George Perez and Bob Layton.

COM:    Magneto has attacked the Royal Australian Aerospace Research Facility in Woomera, the latest in a series of such attacks on other sites to pillage the components necessary to rebuild Asteroid M.  In Kirinos, Greece, while Xavier and Lilandra are on vacation, he gets a psychic SOS from the X-Men who are helpless prisoners of Mags in his Antarctic Base.  Storm musters enough control, remembering the teachings of El Gibar, and begins to pick the lock of her bindings.  Magneto, in space, gets an alarm, and heads back to his automated prison to find his prisoners loose.  During the fight, one of Phoenix's blasts damages the ceramic shield, and lava begins to pour in.  She and Beast get cut off from the others while Magneto expends most of his power to escape.  Phoenix manages to break free as well with Beast in tow, but the effort proves too much for her and she collapses.  At story end, they are a billion miles from nowhere at night in a blizzard, and Beast, suffering from frostbite, collapses into the snow.  Cover by John Byrne and Bob Layton.

COM:    The team is dealing with the dilemma created by the gaggle of heroes and villains calling themselves Defenders, and the team led by Hellcat gets out of being arrested with Herc's Avengers ID card.  They chase the villains into Grand Central Station and lose them on a runaway subway train.  While Dollar, back on campus, discovers that Ledge is out of the hospital, Hawk's team encounters another false alarm, and his short temper drives his members away.  He then takes on Libra's team single handed and gets the snot beat out of him.  Hellcat's tem catches up with the train, and, when the fight turns quickly against them, Patsy displays the first of her demonic powers to save her life, and wipes everyone out, hero and villain alike.  Val's team reaches Hawk, and, while they take on Libra's team, she has some sort of a Norse flash back and sees all the others as giants, ogres, and trolls.  When she starts swinging, the other heroes bug out, until Hawk can bring her to her senses.

COM:    BH has brought GR to Last Chance, Nevada and prepares to hang him on a gallows made of Hell-fire.  When BH's demonic employer arrives, it is revealed that he had made a bargain to trade his soul for his own, but the creature was trying to go back on the deal.  GR and BH team up against the common foe and blast it back to Hell, but then their own contention continues.  BH relates his origin, how he was a bounty hunter in the told west and liked to kill for his gold, even if it meant gunning someone down in their sleep, but when he is killed by the brother of his latest mark, he goes to Hell and strikes a deal with the demon, to bring him fifty souls of his choosing for his own.  Back on the street, ready to gun down GR, he is attacked by the spirits of some of his past marks.  GR gets tied up in the fight, but he can't stop them from towing the Bounty Hunter away with them, followed by his demonic mount.  At story end, Johnny is wondering if GR will eventually destroy him, too.  Cover by Keith Pollard and Bob Layton.

COM:    1st appearance of the Mercy Killers.  Maggia appearance.  Peter, sans costume, stops some thugs from robbing an elderly couple on the subway.  He gets home and is surprised by all his friends who, to cheer him up after missing his graduation by a gym credit, throw him an un-graduation party, dress him in a disco suit, and take him to the Beyond Forever Disco.  In NJ, a truck hauling nuclear materials is hijacked by Maggia thugs, and in the club, Peter is snubbed by MJ.  Back stage, the headliners mesmerize the proprietor and rob the box office receipts.  They perform their act like nothing happened and use their powers on the audience, but Peter manages to stick webbing in his ears to keep from being mesmerized and robbed.  He clashes with the leader, who has a few home grown gimmicks built into his costume, but he is beaten when Spidey manages to wrangle his special headphones off and he succumbs to the hypnotic sounds of his back up singers.  At story end, the crowd wakes up to find the band members trussed up waiting for the police.

A new index to their HQ.  Microbe 201-B escapes and attacks Reed (how he escapes isn't revealed until the letters column in #204).  Ben's Reverse Polarity Force-Resistors malfunction and almost kill him.  Sue is attacked by the security lasers, and Johnny is nearly smothered by fire extinguisher foam.  The team works together to reach the central power core to deactivate the computers; Sue, after the security devices have downed everyone else, manages to shut it down.  Reed runs a diagnostic on the computer system and finds nothing wrong, and, at story end, the team celebrates being together again.   Signed cover by Keith and Joe.

COM:    1st full appearance of Big M II.  The Maggia Executive Council met to discus the elimination of Spider-Man, and the proposal of Carrion was not only denied, they dropped the whacko down a trap door when he began attacking them.  While Spidey is trying to figure out what direction his life should take, Tiger goes against his promise to his sister and stops what appears to be the Savage Skulls jacking a car, but it turns out they were trying to oust a pusher from the neighborhood.  A truck delivers the Birdroid to Citicorp Center, and while Spidey is dealing with the Maggia foot soldiers, it explodes through he safe like it was nothing.  It then transforms into the Tri-Man's human form and begins collecting money, and before Spidey can figure out what to do, he gets blasted by MM's new and improved Opti-Blast.

All of the characters between the [ ] appear only in flashback or in the alternate reality.  Story does an overview of Rick's altered life, from the retelling of IH #1 when he becomes the Hulk instead of Banner, to AV1 #1 when he helps found the Avengers, to CAP #110 when he becomes Cap's sidekick, to CM #17 when Rick becomes Captain Marvel's sidekick. and the Skrull/Kree War.  Ending with Rick being separated from the Hulk and from Marvel, and everyone living happily ever after.

COM:    The X-Men are in the Savage Land helping Ka-Zar to right the ecological turmoil created by Garokk's new city, but they are discovered and the Sky Demons get away with everyone but Logan, Storm and Kurt.  Logan sends Zabu for Tongah, and the three attack the citadel on their own.  They reach the Temple to find their team mates being sacrificed, and while the others are busy freeing themselves, Cyke goes after Garokk, who has run off to reenergize himself.  On the roof of the Temple, they do battle, and Garokk siphons off so much power from the volcano, that it erupts and tears the city apart with a massive earthquake.  Cyke and Garokk fall into its maw, but Banshee is able to save Scott, although Storm isn't so successful   To her horror, she wasn't able to save him.  Two weeks later, the X-Men set out in a boat made by the Fall People, and as they round Drake Passage at story end, they are struck with one of the worst winter gales to hit Cape Horn in over a hundred years.  Signed cover by John Byrne and Terry Austin.

COM:    Moloid Subteraneans appearance.  Story takes place shortly after issue #201.  Team meets at Alicia's, who has just finished a statue of Agatha.  Mole Man is kidnapping people from all over the city;  DD looking to get involved.  In part 2:  Tower asks for the FF's help.  Mole Man sets out for his final raid, ends up at Alicia's.  In part 3:  While the FF battle his henchmen, Mole Man makes off with Alicia, and Sue follows.  In part 4:  FF respond to Sue's flare, follow Mole Man's trail down through a hole in the Subway.  Find a city filled with imperfect people.  In part 5:  The Ff press Mole Man, but the outcasts stand up for him.  The FF realize that its all been a misunderstanding, that Mole Man was actually trying to help the people.  Those who don't which to stay are allowed to leave, and, at story end, Alicia has created a statue of Mole Man.
