abilities. It was once thought to be sentient, but later it was revealed
to be mindless and preying on the subconscious of the user's own mind, but it
does feed on light. In later continuity, a mutant, Manuel Gallante, with
latent powers discovers he can not only draw the darkforce into this world, but
is able to control it, becoming Darkling, and using the new found power to seize

Dark Phoenix
(Deceased) ('Jean Grey' see: Black Queen I, Phoenix II)
The full embodiment of the Phoenix Force as a malevolent being seeking ultimate
power, wearing essentially the same costume as Phoenix II, but the green of her
costume was replaced with red. When Phoenix II was first born, she created mental barriers that
kept the godlike force from gaining full control, but when Jason Wyngarde
(Mastermind) used his augmented powers to Subvert Phoenix to his will, he
inadvertently broke down those barriers one at a time to create his Black Queen.
When she finally shook loose of his control, the damage was already done, and it
was only a short time afterward, as the X-Men ware escaping the Hellfire Club,
that the Phoenix Force emerged. After wrecking the team, she sailed off
into space looking for more and more power, and took it in the form of the sun
of the D'Bari system, killing all the inhabitants of the fourth planet.
She then returned to Earth, and was defeated by Prof. X, who replaced the mental
blocks, and restored the identity of Jean Grey. Unfortunately, the damage
had been done, and the dominant races in the universe, the Shi'ar, the Skrulls,
and the Kree convened and decided that she was too powerful and destructive a
force to be allowed to live. She was captured as part of Project Omega
along with her team mates, and were granted a trial by combat (Arin'nn haelar)
by Shi'ar law and pitted against the Imperial Guard using the Blue Area of the
moon as their battle ground. When the fight turns against them, she
reverts back to Dark Phoenix and it seems nothing will stop her, until the very
last, a bit of Jean Grey surfaces, and, knowing that as long as she lived the
Phoenix Force would always inevitably surface, she allows herself to be killed by one of
the ancient Kree death machines. Nothing is left, not even a body.

The being was the exact copy of him but with black outer skin instead of silver
and was supposedly created and grown from every evil deed the Surfer ever did,
gaining sustenance from every sin he ever committed, all his repressed guilt,
retrained anger, and loathsome self pity. As the two battled, the Dark
Surfer tried to get the real Surfer to give in to temptation, start living for
himself, but the real Surfer would not allow himself to become the callous being
this creature had become. When neither could best the other, the real
Surfer realized that they were simply two halves of the same whole, and he
melded with him, absorbing him back into his body.

Carrion I, promising that if he helped him get revenge on Spider-Man, he would
give him the web slinger's powers. Vale was one of the Biophysics
undergraduates at ESU who had the misfortune to come across one of the cloning

mutated by its extended gestation period. Vale sold his soul into his
service for the promise of great power, and helped his new master to set up
Peter Parker for the kill, even going so far as to take on the White Tiger who
was keeping Peter's back. He was no trained fighter by any means and when
he didn't have the extreme element of surprise in his corner, he didn't stand
much of a chance against the martial arts master except for his built in gadgets
like the laser tipped glove. When he believed that his master had turned

(Alison Blaire) A singer who is also a mutant able to transform sound into light,
creating a dazzling display of colored lights, later she's able to

butterfly shaped mask covering her eyes and cheeks. Later, she added
special roller skates to the ensemble, and mush later, when she joined the
X-Men, she opted for a simple purple body suit and headband over very short
cropped hair. In her first appearance, in a gig at the Delano Street
Discotheque, she was using her powers as a light show to back up her act but had
no idea of where they came from. When her act was interrupted by two
Hellfire Club mercenaries in power dampening armor attacking two of the X-Men,
she used her powers to short circuit the armor and dazzle the occupants and was
informed by Cyclops that she was a mutant. She suddenly finds herself
going from trying to break into the NYC nightclub scene to fighting along side

that much easier, but come to find out she had been debriefed by the FBI after

Defenders (see:
Dragon Circle) The first non-team of super and costumed heroes, originally
brought together to fight the doomsday device, Omegatron. At first the
team was more loosely knit and the roster changed often (a concept that would
come into Strange's second team, the Secret Defenders) and they worked out of
his home in Greenwich Village. After the inclusion of Nighthawk, he began
to use his financial powers for their benefit and had a hi-tech HQ built for
them so they wouldn't have to keep imposing on the good doctor [DEF #17].
After Strange left the team, one of the side kicks, Dollar Bill, arranged a
membership drive and their ranks were increased very briefly by the likes of Ms
Marvel I, Prowler I, Jack of Hearts, Hercules, Son of Satan, Iron Fist, Nova I,
Marvel Man I, Stingray, Black Goliath, Falcon, Polaris, Paladin, Torpedo,
Captain Ultra, Captain Marvel I, Havok, Tagak, and White Tiger as they cleaned
up the super villain havoc the drive created in the city [DEF #62]. After
the Riding Academy was destroyed and Kyle Richmond was kicked out of his
penthouse, the team settled into the house in Montclair, NJ left to Hellcat by

Aragorn (while she left the team briefly to seek out the real identity of
Barbara Norris), but he took it upon himself to equip it with the latest
communications and monitoring systems and even had an Adamantium chair made for
the Hulk. He said it was so the team didn't have to keep imposing on the
good doctor at his Sanctum Sanctorum for a place to meet, but it was probably
equally so because he was really enjoying the new super hero shtick. At
first it was almost never used, but after Dr. Strange took leave from the team,
they had to switch from his Sanctum to the riding academy for their full-time HQ

Deviants A Celestial
experiment overseen by the Dreaming Celestial during the First Host gone
terribly wrong. Unlike their Eternal cousins, they are a tyrannical,
warlike, genetically unstable race of monstrosities. These traits led them
to rebel against the Second Host of Celestials 25,000 years and were nearly
wiped out with the sinking of Lemuria (their home) her sister continent of
Atlantis. Residing now in the sunken part of their old continent, (Lemuria
II), they fear the coming of the Fourth Host and how they will be judged, and
will go to any length to prevent or stop their space god creators, a goal which
has led them into direct opposition with their sworn Eternal enemies. The
Deviants have two offshoots, the Mutates, and the Rejects, and it is toward this
second group that another of their redeeming traits arises, a press toward
racial purity called Purity Time in which they are attempting to stabilize their
gene pool by eliminating those they consider too deformed or ugly to live.

orange Shadow Cloak, which connects him with the Demon Realm (allowing him to
travel through the cloak to anywhere including other dimensions and to pull out
just about any weapon he wants) and mentally does anything he wants it to,
including changing his outer appearance. He started as a soldier of
fortune after the Vietnam war and later got involved with a cult (the Agents of
Fortune) to become their Reaper of Souls. He became an initiate and a
believer, and they provided him with his demonic cloak to do the job.
Unfortunately, he discovered that they were trying to give birth to a race of
demons, and he wasn't about to have any of that and took on the guise as the
slayer, bent on stopping their Xenogenesis. This didn't make their leader,
Vera Gemini, particularly happy, and because she knew he was an important part
of her plan, she vacillated between trying to lure him back into the fold and
kill him. In his first time out after taking on the new identity, he made
an effort to locate his ex-wife and got tangled up with Deathlok I, who thought
she was his ex-wife Janice. When the plan of the cult he belonged to

powers, invulnerability to conventional weapons and cannot be photographed) and

decimated their ships' power source, their Cazalyte Crystals. When they
sought replacements on a seeming peaceful world (one once spared Galactus'
appetite by the Silver Surfer) they intentionally gave the mineral Kortilon
which caused a protonic reaction and caused their craft and all aboard to die in
unquenchable fire, save one who had been on a hunting mission. He spent
the next several years systematically wiping out the killers, using natural
strength and his teleporter and cloaking device. Nearly done with his
task, the Surfer returned, and, not understanding the truth of the matter,
confronted the alien, and, because he didn't know the creature's physiology, he
accidentally killed it.

Dragon's Breadth, Cult of
A little known cult originating in Cambodia that believed by a process of
selective breeding they could eventually produce beings with enough enhanced
powers that they could seize control of the world. It received its name
when, centuries before hand, the progenitors of the cult discovered the Well of
All Things in the Jungle north of the Se Kong River, and they called the mystic
emanations pouring forth the strength of Dragons. They spent decades
building a temple around the Well, to protect and hide it's power from outside
eyes, and then the wisest of the group devised a plan where they believed by
selective breeding they could eventually produce disciples who could control the
massive power pouring forth through the dimensional breach into this world.
So, for centuries, the word was passed down, and mates were carefully chosen,
and the whole isolated society worked toward the common goal laid out in those
original prophesies, until, after ages of long planning, the final generation
was born after WWII that must be mated, by the prophesies, with men from the
west. It was about this time that Tai, a member of the previous
generation, not wanting to share the power, killed the rest of Cult members who
might oppose her and became the high priestess. In '66, when the daughters
of the cult came of age, Tai forced a band of unwitting GIs, there during the
Viet Nam war, into a Pact which would mate them with the daughters and produce
the final generation of super powered offspring. Through the power of the
Cult, she manipulated events that not only brought these offspring home to
Kampuchea, but produced a second batch of heroes that she could use as
sacrificial lambs to stopper the Well and allow her, through her avatars, siphon
off the resultant energies and rule the world. Members of which:
Tai (high Priestess) [first seen member], Miyami (Chord) [second seen member],

Half Fulls, during the Viet Nam war, were sent to the area to clear a landing
base, but instead found themselves forced into the Pact by the high priestess,
Tai, the intricate machinations of which led to her eventual death and the
destruction of the Temple, leaving behind nothing but a crater where the edifice
once stood. The Temple was guarded by trained warriors who were dressed in

Drax the Destroyer
(see: Arthur Douglas) A super powerful, nearly invulnerable, purple
and green engine of destruction whose main purpose in life is the destruction of
Thanos. He was created when Kronos, trying to stop the rampage of the mad
Titan, Thanos, from destroying his home and people, extracted the soul of Arthur
Douglas from the netherworld, and, combining it with a uncontrollable desire to
kill Thanos, used it to animate a body he created from the earth of a barren
world and imbued it with incredible strength. Unfortunately, his single
mindedness often proved to be more of a hindrance to those also interested in
stopping the mad Titan rather than the punishment to the errant Eternal that he
was meant to be. Time and time again he failed to live up to his name,
often teaming with the likes of Captain Marvel I or the Avengers, until finally
Thanos was killed by Adam Warlock. Later, again working with the Avengers,
he pitted his might against the telepathic powers of his one tome daughter,
Moondragon, who had taken it upon herself to enslave the Ba-Bani. During
the battle, she used her powers and destroyed his brain, killing him, but also
shattered Moondragon's resolve to continue the conflict. Much later, when
the mad Titan was resurrected by Death and began his plans to wipe out half the
universe with the Infinity Gauntlet, Kronos again resurrected the Destroyer to
track down Thanos, but, because of the brain damage from his last incarnation,
his mental capacity was greatly diminished and his innate ability to track the
villain impaired, but his physical strength was increased to compensate.
After the fall of Thanos, Warlock, now in control of the Gauntlet, was ordered
by the Living Tribunal to divest himself of godhood for the good of the
universe, and he chose to separate the Infinity Gems among preselected
individuals to keep them safe from future misuse, and Drax received the Power
Gem. Now a member of an actual team, and through continued prodding from
Moondragon, his memories as Arthur Douglas have slowly resurfaced. REL: Arthur Douglas was the father of

Zuras, it was locked away in a hidden crypt far beneath the Earth after its
power was curtailed by the Neutralizer Helmet. Released when the Hulk
robot (Greenskin) exploded, Zuras and the other Eternals did their best to stop
the now mummy-like beast without killing him, but he proved too powerful and
Ikaris was forced to disintegrate him.

Drong (see: Supreme Commander Drong)
Droom (see: Lordsire, Droom)
Druffs A small,
pink humanoid race from the planet Ryas who are as gentle and innocent as they
appear. In their first appearance, they were vastly different, being brown
with leafy bodies, but this could be due to the fact that they were located on
the Skrull Home World. Although it wasn't verified, Reed Richards surmised
they might be some form of sentient, mobile plant life.
First appearance: FF1 #37
Druid, the Small
time crime boss bent on world domination, weeded out and defeated by SHIELD, and
most notably Jasper Sitwell in his first case. The Druid supposedly
produced a mixture of sorcery and technology and ran his organization, based in
an underground hideout, like a cult. With his 'magic' he deduced that Nick
Fury was his greatest enemy and expended a lot of energy in trying to kill him,
producing two superior weapons which he called Satan's Eggs, to do the job.
But he and his men were smoked out and captured.

Druig (Deceased)
A Polar Eternal whose personality ran more toward espionage and conspiracy
rather than the more noble ideals of the Eternals, which led to him being
somewhat of a disappointment to his father. He exceptional power, above
and beyond that of his race, was to be able to create solar flame at will. In his human guise, he posed
as a major in the KGB. When he learned of an ancient weapon that was
powerful enough to kill a Celestial, his evil side became dominant, and he did
some less than noble things to win the secret of that prize, including
kidnapping and torturing Ikaris for information. He was killed in the back
lash when Ikaris destroyed the weapon before misguided Eternal could use it. GA: Eternals. REL: Son of Valkin.

Dwyer, President
The hard nosed president of ESU who became involved with a student revolution
when he announced, because of budget constraints, that he would need to close
the school's night class program. When it was revealed that he had refused
a multi million dollar bid for the Erskine Manuscript, he was accused of caring
more for a dead scientist's book than for his live students. He called a
meeting of the board of directors and made it plain that the accusations were
true and refuse to bend for what he referred to as loudmouthed slum kids.
When the book was stolen that evening, he was the first to believe that it was
some Puerto Rican hoodlum. Not willing to back down, he was ready to have
the police start arresting his students when one of his professors admitted to
stealing the book to make him see sense. When the real villains who had
attempted to really steal the book were apprehended, not only did Dwyer not
press charges on his employee, he also saw his way to attempt a compromise with
the students.

Dynamo City A self
contained city in space (18D-X-M Quadrant) where technology and power have
reached their ultimate summit and is supposedly a paradise of science and
commerce. What one learns upon actually entering the city is that there is
no free energy that is allowed to penetrate the outer perimeter and the
entrances and exits are guarded by huge, armored, robot City Guards and the
streets are patrolled by robot Police. The
next thing one notices is that pretty much everything is run by robots, and that
their court system is an unjust farce of the worst kangaroo kind. The next
on the list is that there is an exorbitant fee of 50 credits to exit the city,
and that finding any source of income is almost impossible, particularly for an
outsider and that all the businessmen are hideously crooked. Next,
that there is a whole city (Tent City) of people who have been trying to earn
the money necessary to leave, that there is a four strike rule, which if
exceeded gains you instant execution. Next one learns that the city has a
strong passion for entertainment, including the Stim-Network and a regular light
show by freelance power casters. The last thing you learn is that the
whole city is run by by a deaf, dumb, and blind giant eyeball (Great I) and that
their form of execution involves being ejected into the vacuum of space.
Silver Surfer made the mistake of entering the city to be questioned about the
death of Thanos and spent days, without his power cosmic, trying to escape.
Inhabitants include: Thanos, C2DT42, Judge P-42D-C [first seen
inhabitants], Big Fram Bom, Zeaklar Belgewater [SS3 #41], Great I [SS3 #42],
First
appearance: SS3 #40
Dynamo City Guards
Large sentient armored robots who are powerful enough to overpower the Silver
Surfer without his power cosmic, although it takes several to subdue him, but
they stand no chance against him at full strength. They guard the
entrances and exits of the city, not so much to keep people out but to keep
those who can't pay the 50 credit exit fee in. They are basically humanoid
in shape with domes heads and large red eyes and they have legless counterparts
that are able to fly outside the city.
First
appearance: SS3 #40
Dynamo City Police
Similar in structure to the large heavily armored Guards, but with a large P on
their chest and a small incongruous police cap on top of their small bullet
shaped heads. They stand about ten feet tall and patrol the inner streets
of the fabulous city. One of their number suggested to the Silver Surfer,
who had just lost his job to earn credit to leave the city, that he should look
up Tent City instead of being a vagrant in the main city.
First
appearance: SS3 #41
Dynamo City Stim-Network
Short for Stimulation Network. Where the whole city revolved around
entertainment, one of the favorites was a show called "Their Life" on SNET.
The show involved a mental scan of a willing participant and the whole extent of
their memories is broadcast for all to see. The Silver Surfer attempted to
raise money for his exit fee by participating in the program, which had the air
of a game show about it, but he wasn't aware before they clamped him into the
device that all his memories would be made public nor that he would be cheated
out of all but 2 of the 200 credits promised.
First
appearance: SS3 #41
Dynamo City/Tent City
A shanty town easily as large as a good sized metropolis on Earth located just
outside the main structure in Dynamo City. As the name denotes, it is made
up of impermanent structures, mostly tents and is peopled by the disenfranchised
who are unable to come up with the credits to leave the City. Silver
Surfer stayed here while trying to escape from the crooked place himself.
The only named inhabitant was Zeaklar Belgewater, although other incidental
characters with broken dreams wee shown.
