Maa-gor    The last of the Savage Land Ape Men tribe who rose to the position as leader of the Swamp-Men.  As such, he kidnapped Marvel Girl and Angel, tried to kill Daredevil, and later led the attack on Skull Island and drove Plunderer from the Savage Land, rescued by Namor when the island exploded.  He is large and hairy, leaning definitely to the sub-human side of evolution, and, although not terribly bright, is crafty and cunning and a long running foe of the jungle lord, Ka-Zar.

Maarin    (see:  Mekkan)  Home planet of Torgo II.  Almost destroyed by the Skrulls when their greatest champion refuses to kill the Thing at the Great Games.  Later revealed that this was the name of the planet when the Mekkans' biological creators where still the dominant species, but, after a plague wiped them all out, their robotic servants continued on and renamed the planet to a more appropriate name.

Mac    NYC police officer who was one of the patrols responding to the fight between Gladiator and Daredevil on the docks who ends up escorting Karen Page back to the offices of Nelson and Murdock.

Mac    One of the guards at the Cape that tries to take Captain Marvel I into custody over questions of his loyalty only to see the hero fade before his eyes (using his new teleporting ability).

Mac   One of the police officers who pursue Captain America I (whose body had been traded with that of the Red Skull via the cosmic Cube) from the roadblock he tried to run, and then thought it strange when he thought the expert driving resembled that of the star spangled hero.

Maccabee    The large, super strong humanoid enforcer of the Imperial Gamesman in the gladiatorial games on Homeworld.

Mace, Gideon    A costumed criminal working out of the Bronx who, with his right hand covered with a spiked metal ball, set about the job of killing super beings.  He started with local hero, White Tiger, and lured him into his death trap by killing his entire family.

Machine Man    (Aaron Stack  form. X-51, Mister Machine)  One of the X-Model robots created by the Project (Institute of Computer Robotics) that was given a human face and raised as the son of Dr. Abel Stack instead of like a machine, which saved him from the fatal identity crisis that plagued and was the destruction of the others.  After encountering the Monolith, he went out into the world to seek his destiny and to embark on a career as a super hero, later adopting a human duel identity working in an ad agency.  His body, although humanoid in appearance, is riddled with all sorts of tools and weapons.  He can negate gravity, impersonate other voices, his arms and legs extend to great length, pick locks, etc.

Machinesmith    (deceased)  (Samuel 'Starr' Saxon  form.  Mister Fear II)  Mister Fear turns back to his original vocation of robot building.  It is revealed that after his 'demise' as Mr. Fear against Daredevil that his robot servants saved him by investing his mind into a computer, with which he controls his many robot doubles.  he tricks Captain America I into destroying this computer and in essence killing him.

Machus    An alternate 23rd century Earth ruled by Mahkizmo where the men are the dominant race and women are slaves, and whose people are at war with the Famizons, whose world is the exact opposite.  They were the creators of the the Statis Cage and the Domina-Ray, and bred the Three-who-wait and the Rampager for their gladiatorial games.  The death of Mahkizmo caused an explosion that somehow combined both worlds making both sexes equal.  It's members include Mahkizmo [first seen member], Gagnor [FF1 #152].

MacIntosh, Ann    Classifieds solicitor for the Daily Bugle.

Mack, Collier   A member of the unit that was sent into the Plateau Dus Bolovens in Cambodia, during the Vietnam War, looking to create a landing base, but instead he and his compatriots stumbled across the Temple of the Dragon's Breadth.  They were forced by the high priestess, Tai, into the Pact, wherein, they were all to wed daughters of the Cult, the production of centuries of selective breeding, to create offspring that would possess powers that would allow them to harness the Well of All Things and become the rulers of the world.  Pvt. Mack, like most of the others, participated, and he and his 'wife' produced a son who, as an adult, became a costumed vigilante with his unrealized powers, and eventually was recruited into the Folding Circle with the rest of the Pact offspring.  REL:  Father of Smiling Tiger.  GA:  Half Fulls.

Macon    One of the Hellfire Club Mercenaries who was viciously and critically wounded by Wolverine during his one man siege of the prestigious club to free his captured team mates, the X-Men.  Possibly the one who gets the drop on Wolverine in the upper floors and gets tossed like a ragdoll.  He was later rebuilt as a cyborg by Donald Pierce and made a member of the mutant hating (particularly Wolverine) band of mercenaries.  GA:  Reavers I.

Macone, Joey    A NYC police officer who is noted for taking risks while on the job.  After nearly getting killed running down some counterfeiters, his wife made him promise to take it a little more safely.  Unfortunately, soon after, the Beetle invaded police headquarters to regain his lost money, and, when Spider-Man began to lose ground to the villain, Joey had to break his promise to save the hero's life.  When he is promoted to detective, his wife walks away from the ceremony and it can only be assumed that she was leaving him.  REL:  Husband of Mary Anne Macone.

Macone, Mary Anne    The wife of a NYC police officer who. although proud of her husband's accomplishments, is terrified of the day when his risky actions eventually get him killed.  After stopping some counterfeiters and nearly being killed, she forces him to promise not to take so many risks in the future.  He is forced to break the promise soon after to save the life of Spider-Man, and, at the ceremony that raises him to the grade of detective, she walks away, presumably leaving him.  REL:  Wife of Joey Macone.

Mac-Ray Moving Co.    The moving company that was hired by the Defenders to switch their HQ from the Sanctum Sanctorum in NYC to the Richmond Riding Academy in Queens.

MacTaggert, Joseph Sr.    (Deceased)  A wealthy member of British Parliament (hoping one day to be Prime Minister) living in Edinburgh who refused to divorce his Nobel winning wife because of the political clout her name lends his.  Although he can be charming, he is a jerk of the first water, and when his wife comes to warn him about their son, who had recently escaped from Muir Island, he brushed her off.  He pays for the slight when, shortly after her departure, his son arrives and takes possession of his body, killing him and eventually burning out his body, which formed a strange symbiosis with the host.  REL:  Husband of Moira MacTaggert.  Father of Proteus II.

MacTaggert, Joseph Jr.    (Deceased)  (see:  Proteus II)

MacTaggert, Dr. Moira    (Moira MacTaggart)  Foremost geneticist specializing in mutant physiology, particularly those with super human powers,  founder and head of the Muir Island Institute, first human to contract the legacy virus, old fiancée of Prof. X, later romantically involved with Banshee.  She was first introduced, with her strong Scottish accent, as the housekeeper at the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters to cover for Prof. X who was taking an unscheduled vacation  (due to the telepathic dreams from Lilandra) and intended to leave her there in charge.  Later, when the team first visited Muir Island, her real credentials were revealed.  When Magneto had been turned into an infant by Alpha II, he had been placed in her care until he was restored by Eric The Red II.  She was also given the custody of Dragonfly and was caring for Jamie Madrox.  After the ordeal with D'Ken Neramani and the M'Kraan Crystal, Prof. X was back on he mend, and Moira, deciding that she'd neglected her duties long enough, left the team [UXM #110].  Later she officially adopted Rahne (Wolfbane) Sinclaire.  REL:  Daughter of Lord Kinross.  Widow of Joseph MacTaggert.  Mother of Proteus II.

MacWhirter, Angus    (deceased)  The proprietor of a boat rental business in Stornoway off the coast of Scotland who had reserved a hovercraft for Moira MacTaggert, but when the X-Men, in costume arrived to take the vehicle to Muir Island, his mutant hating side surfaced and not only did he not allow them to take the hovercraft, he tried to keep their money as well.  The team took it anyway, and the hovercraft was destroyed by Magneto before they reached shore.  Harboring a massive grudge for the team even though he was well compensated for his loss, when Moira and the crew were in Edinburgh for the holidays, he went out to the island to exact revenge in the form of several explosive charges and insted of getting some of his own back was attacked and killed by Mutant X/Proteus II.

Madame Belladonna    (see:  Belladonna)

Madame Hydra    (see:  Viper II)  The sexy but deadly Hydra agent that was at first the leader of a small contingent that was supposed to contaminate the water supply of NYC, but was thwarted by Captain America's newest partner, Bucky IV, who stumbled across her operation by mistake.  Soon after, she attempted revenge, not only almost killing Cap, but the Avengers and the heads of SHIELD as well before her own Hunter Missile doubled back on her.  She was made an orphan early in life form an explosion that took the lives of her parents during the revolution in strife torn Europe and also left the side of her face scarred (over which she always wears her hair).  For years she struggled to survive until she hooked up with Hydra and quickly started rising in their ranks until she became the Supreme Hydra of the NY sector.   Later she broke off from Hydra and took the name by which she is currently known.

Madame MacEvil      (Heather Douglas  see:  Moondragon)  The name adopted by Heather Douglas when she first returned to Earth and her hot tempter and superiority caused her to class with Iron Man and started her down the path of her first taste of being a criminal.  REL:  Daughter of Yvette and Arthur (Drax) Douglas.  Cousin of Sundragon.

Madame Macabre    The proclaimed daughter of a rickshaw driver in China was taken under the wing of the Mandarin and set out on a life of crime on her own when she developed her own size altering technology.  With an electronic device she kept in her wig, she was able to enlarge and shrink her special plastic "toys" fashioned by her loyal servant, Gogo, but wanted to steal the abilities of Giant Man I whose powers could also affect organic materials.  When her offer of partnership was refused, she lured GM to her by kidnapping Wasp, but the two of them together defeated her and she went to prison.  Her powers were purported to have been gained while she was studying at a lamasery where her benefactor had sent her, but her hidden electronic circuits where uncovered in the tussle with Hank and Jan.

Madame Masque    (Countess Giulietta Nefaria, Whitney Frost, Kristine 'Krissy' Longfellow,  form.  Big M.  see:  the Director)  Head of the Nefaria family Maggia who hides her damaged face behind a gold mask, later becomes a love interest for Iron Man I which causes jealousy between him and Jasper Sitwell, who is also in love with her.  REL:  Daughter of Count Nefaria and Countess Renata Nefaria.  Adoptive daughter of Byron and Loretta Frost.  GA:  Maggia.

Madame Olga    A failed actress turned huckster who runs the fortune telling booth at the Quentin Carnival with her $1.98 mystic crystal.   She is wheelchair bound and has no real precognitive powers.  In her first appearance, she purchases an ancient bowl candle and unwittingly ushers the Wind Witch into this world, but she with the help of Ghost Rider IV are able to drive her back. When Adam Henderson possessed by the entity Null came to her tent, she got her first taste of real fortune telling when he conveyed his origin to her and how he came to be in this man's body, scaring the socks off of her [GHR2 #71].

Mad Pharaoh  (King Hatap)  An evil, Egyptian king from 31 BC who attempted a rebellion against Cleopatra and, when it failed, took a potion that put him into suspended animation for 2000 years.  Upon waking, he kidnapped Tony Stark with the intention of forcing him to make weapons that would defeat the Greek queen and brought him back to his century.  As Iron Man I, Stark quickly took sides with the opposition and defeated Hatap's army.  The evil king attempted to escape again into the future, but accidentally fell on a sword in the scramble and was killed.

Madripoor      A small Indonesian island with strong heritage in piracy, has a very pre-WWII Hong Kong atmosphere, Wolverine is part owner of a bar there, operating ground of Tyger Tiger, primary inhabitants consist of:  Patch (Wolverine), Baran, Tyger Tiger, Gen. Coy, Roche, Tai, Archie Corrigan, O'Donnell, Jessica Drew, Lindsay McCabe, Karma, Amahl Farouk (possessing Karma), Sapphire, Styx, Roughouse, Bloodscream, Madame Joy.

Madrox, Dr. Daniel  (Deceased)  Nuclear physicist who worked in the Los Alamos Nuclear Research Center and as a result of his exposure, had a son that was born a mutant.  He designed and built the original containment suit to prevent his son's duplicating powers.  REL:  Father of Madrox, the Multiple Man.  Husband of Joan Madrox.

Madrox,  The Multiple Man     (James 'Jamie' Arthur Madrox)  Mutant with the ability to make multiple doubles of himself using kinetic energy as a catalyst.  Having the ability since birth, it was necessary for his father to build a containment suit to help curb the involuntary duplicating power.  The original suit was green, but he later adopted a blue version.  After some difficulty on the wrong side of the law, he went to live with Moira MacTaggaert at her Mutant Research Center on Muir Island and became her right hand man [UXM #104].  REL:  Son of Dr. Daniel and Joan Madrox.  GA:  Fallen Angels, X-Factor.

Mad Thinker    ('Dr. Jose Santini')  Super intelligent master criminal who plans his crimes to the second, taking into account every possibility, creator of the Awesome Android, reactivated Human Torch I, often partners with the Puppet Master.  Posed for a short time as Dr. Santini to attack the Fantastic Four through the Thing.

Mad Thinker Robot    A very lifelike android which is almost indistinguishable from him which he uses as a proxy when he himself is unavailable (such as in prison) or when a particular situation is too dangerous for him to appear in person.  He is able to mentally control the robot but it is uncertain whether his consciousness actually transfers to the creation while it is functioning or whether he goes into a catatonic state from the sheer willpower necessary to operate such a device.  Later, when he was hired by Genetech to gather DNA samples from the New Warriors, he used the robot, teamed up with Primus, to do the job.  Unfortunately, he hadn't counted on Night Thrasher's fiery temper, and his creation was beheaded in the process (NW #3).

Mad Thinker's Android Man    (Destroyed)  Super powerful android built by the Thinker as protection against his sometime ally the Wizard, accidentally activated just by heat created by the police searching MT's captured hideout.  Programmed to follow a signal to his creator but mistakenly follows one to the Wizard's Wonder Gloves.  He resembles the Deviant leader, Kro (who will appear in ETN #1) and is taken apart by the Thing when he threatens Alicia Masters.

Mad Thinker's Awesome Android    Artificial being created by the Mad Thinker using research done by Mr. Fantastic.  It has a gray,  humanoid body but just a block for a head.  It is incredibly strong and nearly invulnerable.

Mad Thinker's Disolvex Gas    The gas invented by the MT to instantly remove one of his facial disguises, first used on his Dr. Jose Santini mask.

Mad Thinker's Killer Android    The faceless, unspeaking androids created by the MT to guard prisoners.  They were destroyed when the Fantastic Four and local law enforcement raided MT's hideout to rescue Dr. Jose Santini.

Mad Thinker's Monster Android    (form:  Scavenger, Mad Thinker's Most Powerful Android)  When the Scavenger brought itself to life with the Cosmic Control Rod, it also altered its appearance back into a more humanoid form but with a leonine head.  In this form, Mad Thinker took control of him again and tried to use him to take control of the Negative Zone.  it is killed when the Thing removes the Control Rod from its throat.

Mad Thinker's Most Powerful Android     (see:  Scavenger, Mad Thinker's Monster Android)  A 12 foot version of his Killer Android, sent by Thinker to get revenge on the Fantastic Four.  Able to shoot knock-out gas from his fingers, reduce his body temperature, and generate an electrical charge.  Has a retractable disintegrator and flying jets in his feet.  The Ff used everything against it even Reed's Electro-Force Beam, but they finally had to flush him out through the Negative Zone Portal.

Maelen    Lilandra Neramani's new Shi'ar Chamberlain.  On his first appearance, misunderstanding a joke made by his mistress, he is mistakenly called her Chancellor.

Maelstrom of Madness    A powerful spell which, when cast, creates a swirling vortex of colors and lights that is designed to drive a person insane.  Dormammu first cast it on Doctor Strange, who dispelled it with the Flames of the Faltine.

Maggia Executive Council    The board headed by the supreme leader of the crime syndicate that hears proposals and grievances within its organization and passes rulings like a criminal board of directors.  In their first appearance, headed by Big M II, they heard a proposal by Carrion I concerning the disposal of the thorn in their side, Spider-Man, but, because of his obvious instability, they refused to work with him.

Maggia Gambling Ship    A luxury cruiser and floating casino owned and operated by the Nefaria branch of the Maggia, base of operations for Big M.  Where Iron Man was brought when he was kidnapped via Morgan Stark, where he first encountered Whiplash.  Destroyed when AIM agents come aboard and capture Iron Man for themselves.

Magic    A Shi'ar that is a member of their elite guard who is a powerful sorceress and can cast all manner of magical spells.  She wears a light blue body suit with thigh high laced boots, a blue cape, and a white feathery headpiece, and she has the black eye tattooing of her people.  In his first appearance, he and his team mates were protecting Emperor D'Ken Neramani from The X-Men and the Starjammers, who were trying to stop him from destroying the universe.  GA: Imperial Guard.

Magic Cow    A figure in Norse mythology, one of the first figures to spring forth from the Well of Life.  Provided Ymir with sustenance for years.

Magician, the    A stage magician turned second string criminal with seemingly genuine magical powers, who attempted to rob the guests at a wealthy society party, unfortunately attended by the Wasp, who was not only not able to stop him but got herself kidnapped in the bargain.  Giant-Man I staged a second party to lure the hypnotist and pickpocket, rescuing his partner and sending the crook to jail.  Later, after his escape, he tried to get revenge on the Wasp, but was defeated by her solo and turned over to the police a second time.

Magick Universe    A mystical universe where very few of the laws of our universe apply.  Visited by Doctor Strange, it has the appearance of a psychotic hallucination with bizarre shapes and creatures at every turn.  It is the home of Lord Chaos and Master Order (their version of our Death and Eternity) and of their creation, the In-Betweener.  Access to this universe is normally by magical means only, but when the Elders of the Universe attempted to slay Galactus, his Herald caused a nearby sun to go nova and opened a black hole which proved to be an access point as well.

Magma    (Amara Juliana Olivians Aquilla, Allison Crestmere)  A mutant from Nova Roma who is able to transform her body to living lava.  It is later revealed that she was of British decent and had been living with her family when Selene kidnapped her, wiped her memory, and placed her with another family in the Amazon Jungle.  GA:  New Mutants.

Magneto    (Eric Magnuson, 'Michael Xavier', see:  Creator, White King, White Pilgrim)  One of the most powerful of the mutants, the master of magnetism, having complete control over anything metal, including the iron in people's blood, has fluctuated in his career between good and evil.  Although originally interested in world domination and the furtherment of mutant kind by less than legal means (having founded the original Brotherhood of Evil Mutants).  During one of his plans to make the ultimate mutant using the equipment he had employed to create the Savage Land Mutates, he made Alpha II too perfectly, and it rebelled and reduced him and his Brotherhood to infants [DEF #16].  After being placed in the care of Moira MacTaggert in the Mutant Research Center on Muir Island, he was restored to adulthood by Eric the Red II and sicced on the X-Men (during the plot to undermine Lilandra Neramani).  Victory was stolen from him by their retreat [UXM #104], so he caught up with them later when they had been captured by Mesmero and placed them in power dampening restrains and left to rot in his Antarctic Base while he rebuilt his Asteroid M base.  They escaped eventually, but the base was destroyed and it was assumed that most of the members perished in the molten lava, but they in fact escaped into the Savage land [UXM #113].  He is revealed to be Magda Magnuson's ex-husband and consequently the father of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch [UXM #125], Later he was made the headmaster for Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters and the leader of the New Mutants as Charles' brother in his absence.   REL:  Husband of Magda Magnuson. Magneto's Antarctic Base    The huge base a mile underground in the Antarctic that took Magneto years to create covering an area of five square miles and powered by forces from the Earth's core and protected by a huge ceramic dome.  It was primarily the location of the prison he fashioned for the X-Men to get revenge for being reduced to an infant and kept at the Mutant Research Center under Moira MacTaggert.  The base was destroyed when the X-Men escaped their debilitating captivity and the masterpiece of automated technology was filled with molten lava.

Magneto's Asteroid M    Huge asteroid hideout of Magneto and often the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants I, which has an eccentric orbit a thousand miles out in space and is kept hidden from ground-based radar by an array of sophisticated electronics.   In its first appearance, it is destroyed by the X-Men.  Some time later, after he had imprisoned the X-Men in his Antarctic Base, Magneto began looting various Aero-Space organizations and rebuilt his space station.  He would have before this, but he never had the power until after he was restored from being an infant by Eric The Red II, which somehow rejuvenated him.

Magneto's Cult    The cult started by Mesmero in Magneto's name who tried to recruit Lorna Dane, thinking that she was M's daughter.  Their main focus, like Mags, was the downfall of humankind.  They possess a machine (one of Magneto's) that can bring out a mutant's latent abilities, which they turn on the general public.  Mesmero has built an entire hidden city out in the desert on the West Coast around a robot who they think is Magneto, and peopled it with his robot guards with mutant powers, the Demi-Men.  The Cult is infiltrated by the X-Men (trying to save Lorna) by Cyclops in the guise of Erik the Red and eventually disbanded.

Magneto's Island    The longtime island hideout of Magneto.  Base of operations for the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants I.  The Island is destroyed when the Avengers seek to rescue the X-Men from Mags and BoEM, and Mags booby trapped the place to explode.

Magneto Robot    For a time, when it was believed the real master of magnetism was dead, he was impersonated by a very sophisticated robot.  It was first seen as the head of the Magneto Cult when they tried to recruit the new powers of Lorna Dane, falsely informing her that she was his daughter.

Magneto FY    In the Forever Yesterday alternate reality, he has the same powers and the same general appearance as his counterpart in our reality, but here he is the leader of the mutant rebellion attempting to unseat the tyrannical rule of Sphinx II.  While his hand picked team of heroes infiltrated Maqaman Island, he and the White Queen FY gathered together an army of all the super powered beings not loyal to the tyrant.

Lorna Dane, see:  Polaris)  Lorna Dane's mutant magnetic powers were brought out by Mesmero's Mutant Energy Stimulator when it was believed that she was the daughter of Magneto, referring to her as M II.  She at first seemed to be teaming up with Magneto and crew, but in the end sided with her friends, the X-Men against the Magneto Cult.   REL:  Sister of Zaladane.

Magno-Ray    The device created by Dr. August Hopper (Locust) to ironically treat locust eggs and produce giant specimens.  In the field, he also had a portable version.

Magnum, Moses    A costumed criminal who has created a body suit that allows him to access energy from the Earth itself (his Magnum Force) and channel the power to create earthquakes and fires and makes him incredibly strong.  A brilliant ruthless man, the self proclaimed heir to Tony Stark as the Arms dealer to the world, he started an international arms company to rival that of Stark International.  In his first gambit, he clashed with Spider-Man and was assumed dead.   In his second gambit, he built a giant laser cannon on the island of Katsyu Shima to drill to the center of the Earth but he fell victim to his own devices when one of his earthquakes toppled him in the pit [PM AN #1].  He didn't perish, instead, the exotic forces involved melded the suit to him and he found that he possessed the power to access almost limitless power and cast it anywhere in the world.  With this new found power, he tried to hold the island of Japan hostage, scheduling smaller earthquakes to prove his legitimacy and then threatened to sink the whole island if they didn't make him absolute ruler.  He was bested by the X-Men when Banshee matched his siren power to that of Magnum, and the criminal had to call on too much power to overcome the interference, and the extra stress exploded the island [UXM #118-9].

Malice I    A small time costumed criminal who tried to make a fast name for himself by committing very flashy and very public crimes with is newly purchased gadgets.  Among his gadgets (from an unknown source) are an earthquake ray, a ray that shatters weapons, a laser ray powerful enough to destroy cars, a ray powerful enough to destroy a building, and a magnetic vault puller, all of which he wears on his belt.  He also drives a customized AC Cobra equipped with laser rays and missiles.  His first act was to set fire to the Hollywood Wax Museum, trapping and almost killing a young woman inside.  Second, he attacked the power plant in LA, waiting for the press to arrive before shredding the police on site with his gadgets and finally destroying the whole building.  His final act was to rob the Main Street Bank, pulling the vault out through the wall, and it was from this job that Ghost Rider IV, who had had two brushes with him before, caught up with him.  After a merry chase at 220 mph and blowing a bridge to escape the flaming skull menace, his car was wrecked by GR and he was brought low with some cold Hell-fire before being melted to the pavement for the police to find.

Man-Beast    (see:  Hate-Monger II, Mentor III)  One of the New Men who started as a wolf before being genetically accelerated to human stature by the High Evolutionary.  Unfortunately, his fierce nature could not be curbed like the others and he turned against his master, but was defeated by Thor and sent into exile.  He got free and began to wreak havoc on his master's new planet, Counter-Earth, until he was finally stopped by Adam Warlock, who reverted him to his wolf form.  However, his new genetic matrix was simply dormant and he eventually regained his more human form, weaseled his way into their space program and escaped in a rocket to our Earth.  There (in Vietnam during the war), he posed as a force of good, granting the villain Achmed Korba the power of the light, and forcing him to use it only for good (by putting a caveat that he could only use the power when in contact with someone of pure heart) to begin his new cult, the Legion of Light.  When he was ready to collect the last recruits in NYC to begin his conquest of this planet, by using the disciples, attracted and hypnotized by goodness, and twisting them with his ability to make others hate into his foot soldiers.  Unfortunately, his plan was discovered by Spider-Man, Razorback, and Flash Thompson and he was defeated before the plan could come to full fruition, and he was knocked into his hate amplifier, causing an explosion, and presumably died [SSM #15].  GA:  New Men, Evil New Men.

Man-Beast of the Yukon    (see:  Wolverine)  The name given to Wolverine when he and the X-Men had been hypnotized by Mesmero and were made members of the Mr. Mike's One-Ring Traveling Tent show.  Wolvie was part of the freak show and chained up in front of the carnival tent like an animal.  When his memory was restored by seeing Beast taken by the other roustabouts, he broke loose and helped the others regain theirs, starting with Ms. Destiny.

Man-Brute    A powerful creature created by Prof. Silas Cragg when he administers his newly developed Super Soldier Serum to an indigent.  Directed at Captain America I, he recants and kills his creator and vows never to use his new powers ever again.

Mancini    (deceased)  One of Vulture I's thugs who was sent to locate his rival, Black Alfred, in their battle to become the top crime boss in NYC.   They roughly questioned Herman, (a known associate of Alfred) and he brought them for a double cross on the El platform in Harlem.  They were ambushed by Alfred's men and were killed trying to cross the electrified tracks.

Mancusi    One of the Hellfire Club Mercenaries who was one of the guards inside the plant trying to stop the X-Men from rescuing their team mates from the White Queen.  He was taken down in a triple play move by Nightcrawler of bamfing and punching which took down three guards before the first hit the ground.

Mandarin    (Gene Kahn)  An ancient, would be Asian conqueror, directly descended from Genghis Khan, long time enemy of Iron Man.  Acquired his ten power rings from an alien space craft in the Valley of Spirits in China.  Long time enemy of Iron Man.

Mandarin's Hate Ray    A device created in the form of a giant artificial diamond that emitted rays that would cause even the closest comrades to fight one another to the death.  He had intended to use it on the entire planet from his Space Station, but the device required a large amount of diamonds to power it.  He collected together his Minions to solve the fuel problem, but was defeated by the Avengers.  The device was presumably destroyed when they blew up the station.

Mandarin's Minions    The Mandarin collected together a band of costumed and super-powered villains to secure sufficient diamonds to power his newest ultimate weapon, the Hate Ray, which he planned to use on the entire planet.  In teams, they were sent to South America, Asia, and Africa to gain the precious gems by any means available, but they were defeated by a joint effort by the old and new Avengers.  Members including:  Living Laser, Swordsman, Powerman I, Enchantress, Executioner.

Mandarin's Neutralizer Ray    A large device that emits a ray that cancels out the circuitry power of Iron Man I's armor, essentially freezing him in place, helpless.  Mandarin used it on the golden Avenger in order to unmask him after discovering his secret ID.

Mandarin's Space Station  A secret base of operations for the Mandarin and his Minions and a platform from which to use his newest ultimate weapon, the Hate Ray.  After the Mandarin was sucked through a hole punched in its side resulting from a battle created when he turned the Ray on the heroes, the Avengers blew up the station to prevent any other baddies from making similar use of the base.

Mandarin's Teleporter    The device in his Chinese stronghold with which he can transport people and objects from anywhere in the world, first used to rescue the Swordsman from the Avengers after he tried to kill Captain America.

Mandarin's Visio-Synthesizer    A complicated series of machines created by the Mandarin that allows him to amalgamate photographs into undetectable fakes.  After discovering the secret ID of Iron Man I, he used the device to place Tony Stark in photos associating with several known criminal elements and them passed them onto the press.

Mandibus, Doctor    The yellow skinned, six fingered, red eyed alien, augmented with various mechanical prostheses (including his wheeled platform from the waist down), who is known as the best criminal surgeon.  He was the one responsible for installing the bio-system booster capacitors in the bones of  Geater, and when Nebula was left catatonic after being imprisoned at the end of the Infinity Gauntlet affair, her first mate brought her to the good doctor when the doctors and telepaths on Titan failed to do the job.  He restructured her higher brain functions, reviving her, but couldn't leave well enough alone, and made 'improvements' to her left arm and eye and right hip with bionic prosthetics.  He maintains a secret but extensive lab on a dead moon on the outer rim of the Siminian Galaxy.

Mandiz, Rev. Josiah    The man of the cloth kidnapped by Mole Man and brought to Subterranea to perform the marriage ceremony between he and Kala.  Freed by the Fantastic Four.

Mandrill    (Jerome Beechman)  A criminal mutant who appears to be an anthropomorphic mandrill and emits pheromones to attract and control people particularly women, with which he had his own cult following.  He was created when his father, working at the Los Alamos atomic testing facility was accidentally exposed to a large dose of radiation, and his afterward conceived son paid the price, being born in his simian shape.  When the idea of running a cult failed, he turned to a life of crime, but not on a small scale.  Making use of his small army of women soldiers called Fem Force, he's tried several times to set himself up as the leader of the country.  Later, in doing so, he hired in Mutant Force to help him steal a consignment of gold from the Las Animus air base in Co. in order to use the money to buy Wakandan technology to establish his new power base, but he was thwarted not only by the Defenders but by several other interested heroes [DEF #80].  Mandrill is also one of the largest stock holders in the Women's Bank of Saving.  REL:  Ex-husband of Nekra.  Son of Frederic and Emily Beechman.

Mandrill FY    In the Forever Yesterday alternate reality, he has the same general appearance as his counterpart in our reality, but without his normal costume, and presumably has the same powers.  He was among the other heroes gathered together by Magneto FY and the Mutant Resistance Force as an army to overthrow the tyrannical Sphinx II.

Mandroid    (destroyed)  A murderous robotic man-thing used to hunt and execute traitors throughout the far flung Kree galaxy.  Yon-Rogg created one using the Pyche-Magnitron to defeat Captain Marvel I, but it was destroyed when Marvel deduced from where the power was coming and got the robot to shoot the Magnitron.  The Mandroid dissolved into the cave floor matter from which it was created.

Mandroid Mark II    An upgrade on the old mobile body armor by Moses Magnum's Deterrence Research Corporation, making them more resilient with vanadium and making their thermo-couplers more adaptable to power input.  They were first sicced on the X-Men when they invaded Moses' HQ in a bunker in the Kuril Islands off Japan, but Wolverine, Colossus, and Cyclops had little more troubele with these than they did the old model when Moses had sicced them on Yashida Manor.

Mandroid    (Johnny Storm)  In an alternate reality, the Fantastic Four received different powers from the cosmic rays, and Johnny could turn himself into a living robot of organic steel much like Colossus.  His teammates in the new FF are Big Brain, Ultra-Woman, and Dragonfly.

Manelli, Pvt. Dino    A Hollywood heartthrob who joined the army during WWII to give back to the nation that gave so much to him making him such a big acting star.  He was assigned to the First Attack Squad of Able Company under Nick Fury and became their radio man.  Although grievously wounded half way through the war, he returned as a Howler to finish up his tour and even regrouped with the others during the Korean conflict. Mangog    (deceased)  A huge alien creature who possesses the power of all the dead people of his race (a billion billion souls from a thousand thousand worlds) and he makes use of it to attack Asgard with the intention of drawing the Odinsword to bring about the end of the universe (Ragnarok) for revenge of his murdered people, a people he blames Odin for killing.  When the truth of the matter is revealed, Odin didn't kill the murderous race of people by merely imprisoned them for their crimes into the living prison which was Mangog.   Besides being a giant and almost incalculably strong, his skin is like the hardest steel making him, when in conjunction with his boosted power levels, almost invulnerable.  Thor and the Warriors Three nearly kill themselves trying to stop him from approaching the fabled city of the Norse gods, but it is Odin himself, rising from his Odinsleep, who releases the people to return to their homes in peace, dissolving the prison in the process.

Manipulator    A device invented by a man named Hodges to control all the robots afforded his boss, Tapping Tommy, by the Maggia to do away with the Defenders.  When the elongated control box was destroyed by the Valkyrie III, all the remaining robots became inoperative.

Manitou    (Wisa'ka)    A supernatural Indian spirit who is supposed to be the protector of the Comanche people.  He appears as a glowing spectral Indian chief riding an equally spectral horse, and even through he can attack with his arrows and tomahawk, he is also able to summon mystical beings, such as the Thunderbirds and the Hobomokko to do his bidding.  He can be summoned by a medicine man, but he also appears in time of need.  He first appeared when Spotted Doe summoned him for help against the men who were going to blow up the Little Thunderbird Dam so they could loot the Indian village that would be flooded by it.  It unfortunately though Ghost Rider IV to be a part of the operation and attacked him, his arrows actually turning the demon back to his human guise.  Later, or rather previously back in the old west, she summoned the Manitou again to deal with the demon (not realizing he and Johnny Blaze were one and the same), and this time used a tomahawk on him and changed him back before dissolving on the brink, of delivering the killing blow.

Man-Killer I    Assassin hired by Madame Hydra to kill Captain America I.  He nearly completes his mission before being defeated by Cap, who uses the close call to stage his own death.

Man Monster    (deceased)  Designed by the bio-chemist Thaxton to be the first of Richard Raleigh's army of ultimate killing machines, the Monster was a chemically and electronically enhanced common thug which changed him into a giant, incredibly powerful juggernaut.  After his first skirmish with Spider-Man, his electronics were boosted even more, but in his more powerful state, his regular remote control, connected to his brain by an implant at the base of his skull, proved to be ineffective, so Thaxton installed a neuro band around his head capable of causing excruciating pain.  When the new and improved Monster was sicced on George Stacy, who had been looking into Raleigh's records, Spidey learned who was behind his rampage and lead him back to his master's penthouse.  Raleigh, in his anger, overused the pain function and broke the controller, and the Monster went on a rampage that took the life of his master and creator.  In the end, Spidey pulverized the implant on his neck and he collapsed, apparently dead.

Manning College    A small liberal arts university in New Jersey that was experiencing an unprecedented amount of student unrest which turned out to be an AIM plot to secure Prof. Paul Fosgrave a staff mathematician who was the foremost authority on atomic equations.  The plan was thwarted by SHIELD who duped Captain America I to take a hand in the matter posing as a phys ed. instructor.  Staff includes Prof. Fosgrave, and the Dean; and the students include Mart Baker, and Grizzly.

Manny    One of Belladonna's thugs who were helping her to get revenge on Roderick Kingsley.  During their first appearance, they wore stocking masks which hid their faces and the special respirators needed so they weren't affected by their boss' gas gun, black turtle neck shirts and purple slacks.  They weren't particularly well trained or well armed, just your run of the mill hired muscle.  After they rescued their boss from her other hired thug, Prowler II, they were easily subdued by Spider-Man and handed over to Det. Sgt. Snider.

Man-Slayer    (deactivated)  A large, red, powerful plastoid robot sent to the Cape to destroy their new moon rocket.  Besides being incredibly strong and almost invulnerable, it is also able to shoot force blasts from its fingers.  In its first battle against Captain Marvel I, it was beaten only when the Black Widow destroyed its remote control panel.  In the second, after its circuits found a secondary powers source and reactivated, Marvel had to use a Lasonic Disintegrator and cut one of its power cables running from the power pack on its back to its head.

Manta    One of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard who has the ability to see in the infra red range, so she can find a target by the heat they generate, and can produce blinding white and blue light, but it is undefined whether the source is her or her costume, but the power has been linked with her life force.  She wears a white and black body suit with a black cape that connects to arms, enabling her to glide.  Her face is yellow and the inside of her cape is yellow, and she doesn't have any visible pupils.  She was one of the Elite that was chosen to battle the X-men in the duel of Honor for the life of Phoenix II in the Blue Area on the Moon.  GA:  Imperial Guard.

Man Thing    (Dr. Theodore 'Ted' Sallis)  A mindless creature created when Ted Sallis was exposed to the super soldier formula Serum SO-2 in Project Sulphur at his untimely death, stalks the Florida Everglades, reacts to strong emotions, particularly fear, which causes others to burn at his touch.

Manticore    A small time criminal who was outfitted by the Brand Corp. with an armored battle suit (which although not as strong as that of Iron Man, was proof against Hell-fire) that gave him the appearance of the mythical half lion and half scorpion creature.  The front of the suit is equipped with claws sharp enough to sink easily into rock and the face plate, surrounded by his mane, has a more human appearance.  The back legs, which are completely mechanical, resemble those of a lion and are built for a prone stance, and the mechanical tail is prehensile and has a lethal barb at the end.  He was initially hired in by the Brand Corp. to kidnap and kill an Avenger to further their plans to recover the Hellcat suit, in trade for replacing his own missing legs.  He chose Hawkeye as the easiest mark, who was currently acting as a ranch hand with the Two-Gun Kid at the Cheery-O's Dude Ranch, and would have completed his mission if not for the timely arrival of Ghost Rider IV (who as also currently employed at the ranch as Johnny Blaze).  Between the three heroes and a disruptor arrow in his power induction grid, he was soon not only bested but peeled of his armor for good measure.

Mantis  (see:  Celestial Madonna, Mandy Celestine)  An Asian martial arts master who for a short time was a costumed hero before being chosen as the representative of all humanity to bear the Celestial Child.  Born in Saigon, she was raised, after the death of her parents, by the Priests of Pama and trained not only in the martial arts but in the telepathic empathy needed to communicate with the Cotati.  After her memory of this time had been replaced, she became attached to the Swordsman in his plan to infiltrate the Avengers, and after his death she became a member in earnest.  Soon after, however, the training from her past, a counterpart of the training received by Moondragon, came into play, and she was chosen to be the Celestial Madonna by the Cotati.  She married the perfect Cotati, in the reanimated form of the Swordsman, and she returned with him to his world, becoming one with him, and the child was conceived.  When she returned to Earth to give birth and raise the Celestial Child (as Celestine), she was changed, now half human and half Cotati.  Now she is able to commune with plant and can actually transfer her consciousness anywhere that there is greenery and regrow her body anywhere.  REL:  Daughter of Libra I.  Niece of Khrull.  GA:  Avengers.

Mantok the Demon    An ancient winged demon with bat-like wings who was first seen as a pre-cataclysmic artifact in the Sanctum Sanctorum of Dr. strange and identified by Chondu the Mystic who was then residing in Nighthawk I's body.

Mantrax, Bo's'n    (deceased)  One of the alien crew members on the Sanctuary III who, when Thanos set Nebula on fire, was ordered to dispose of her body.  But on board extinguishers put her out, so he hid her in a secret compartment.  After Thanos took possession of the Infinity Gems, he became aware of the stowaway on board.  Despite his best medical skill, his old captain was dying, and for his loyalty to his grand daughter, Thanos burned him to death.  Mantrax was humanoid except that he had four fingers on each hand instead of five, had oversized black eyes, and only had hair on the back of his head which he kept in a pony tail.

Maqaman Island    In the Forever Yesterday alternate reality, it is their version of Manhattan Island where the Egyptians were the ones to discover America, dubbing it instead the United States of Assyria.  It is located in New Memphis state and is the location of the country's capital, New Memphis City.  After Sphinx II took the reins of the Assyrian Empire, there was some difficulty with a mutant rebellion uprising, so a protective shield was placed around the whole island called the Mutant Detection Field.

March, Eddie    An ex-boxer who agrees to take over the duties of Iron Man I when Tony Stark decides, very briefly, to quit as the golden avenger because of the work done to repair his damaged heart.  Stark, however, discovers that his replacement  has a potentially fatal blood clot in his brain, but too late to keep him from getting slaughtered by the latest Crimson Dynamo (III) who was looking to get revenge on the real Iron Man.  It is the nearly fatal beating that makes Stark take up the mantle again and vow to be Iron Man forever.  After a series of operations, March makes a full recovery.

Marshach    (deceased)  In the 26th century, an elderly man who, with his mysterious power, created a utopia from the planet he and his people settled on after escaping Earth.  He became their sovereign and they worshipped him for many many years,  but when it was revealed that he was a descendant of Korvac and that the power had been siphoned from Galactus, he willingly relinquished it despite the fact that it meant the death of he and his wife (who he'd been keeping young and alive all these years) and the end of his utopia.  he was good friends with the Silver Surfer of that time period, and had the power to also sense any threat that might affect his world.

Marshach's Planet    The planet Marshach and his people came to after escaping the Earth in the 26th century, and he used his newfound power to eliminate hunger, disease, and eventually bloodshed and war making it a utopian society and they elected him their sovereign and revered him as a god.  However, the good and simple people had no guardian, and it often fell to the Silver Surfer of that time to play the part.  Many years later, the planet was visited by the Guardians of the Galaxy and it was revealed that Marshach's power came from the villain Korvac, a progenitor of his, and he willingly gave it up, putting an end to the utopia.

Martin, Chip    (see:  Schizoid-Man)  One of the biophysics undergrad students at ESU who was in the same assistant teaching program under Dr. Morris Sloan that Peter Parker was.  Like Peter, his personal problems have kept him separate from his other fellow students and got him branded as an anti-social cold fish.  His main worries seem to involve losing control whenever there is any sort of outside stress, a valid concern, because when he finally loses control of his particular kind of schizophrenia at a party thrown by his parents and crashed by Morbius and eventually Spider-Man, he changes to his alter ego.  Evidently he'd spent years in therapy and took mountains of medication to control it just to be able to walk out among normal society, but the double team effort of the living vampire and the web slinger proved too much.  REL:  Son of Sen. Martin, Rebecca    The wife of a powerful and wealthy NY senator who lived with him and their son in their stately manor in Riverhead, Long Island.  When, years before, she had difficulties in the labor to have her only child, she was given drugs that got into the child's bloodstream and caused him to have, even as an infant, the power to produce solid objects out of mid-air.  Several years later, after a fortune of medications and therapy, he was able to go out among normal society and even take classes at ESU.  Everything was going fine until the night, after he'd begun his graduate work, when Rebecca and her husband threw a mother of a Halloween bash at their home, which was crashed not only by Morbius but Spider-Man as well.  The resultant excitement pushed her son over the edge and transformed into his alter ego, and the next day they were in the city trying to find their missing son, only to witness his beat down by Spider-Man.  REL:  Mother of Chip Martin/Schizoid-Man.  Wife of Sen. Robert Martin.

Martin, Sen. Robert    A very powerful and wealthy politician who lives with his wife and son in Riverhead, Long Island.  After their son started his graduate work at ESU, he and his wife threw a gigantic Halloween bash at their manor, and with the appearance of Morbius and Spider-Man, the excitement proves too much for their son and he transforms into his alter ego.  They had spent a fortune over the years trying to control his powers through medication and therapy.  After the change, they came to the city looking for him, and, even after their son tried to kill him and everyone else around them, he was still angry with Spider-Man for using such force to stop him, afraid that it would have undone all the therapy, possibly permanently.  REL:  Father of Chip Martin/Schizoid-Man.  Husband of Rebecca Martin.

Marty    A small time crime boss working out of Dover, NH. who had his thugs hitting some low hazard targets (like an animal clinic and the marina) but his men had the misfortune to clash with the newly formed super hero, Anything Man. When the new hero was in hot pursuit of his men while robbing the marina, instead of rescuing his men in the getaway boat, eh smashed the dock they were all on to keep the hero from following him.  It was a bad call because the new hero was able to swim after them and capture them on a lonely New England beach.

Marvel Boy    (Robert Grayson, see:  Crusader I)  A golden age hero who first used the Quantum Bands later used by Quasar, gives him super strength and the ability to fly.  He  was telepathic and had an enhanced IQ, and at one timehis stregth came from taking "uranium" pills.  He returned to Earth with his mind unbalanced and began a vengeful spree as the Crusader.  REL:  Son of Dr. Matthew Horace Grayson.

Marvel Boy II    (form. Vance Astrovik, see: Vance Astro, Justice)  A teen age hero with telepathic powers that are just beginning to emerge.  He wears a blue and white body suit with a blue cape, and is capable of lifting and manipulating sizable objects with his mind, creating a 'teke' shield either as a barrier in front of himself, or can wrap it closely around his whole body.  He was once a short time sidekick of the Thing when he was involved with the UCWF, but when his powers began to emerge he decided to turn his sights toward being a costumed hero.  His original attempts, aimed at getting into the Avengers met with lukewarm favor, usually because of his age, but he was then recruited by Night Thrasher into his team of teenage heroes.  Unfortunately, Vance's father is strongly anti-mutant and even more strongly against his son using his powers, leading to great family conflict, including periods of abuse.  During his stint as a member of the Warriors, he was found guilty of killing his father (whom he mortally wounded during another session of beating for using his mutant powers) and, despite Foggy nelson's best efforts, sent to the Vault to serve his time [NW #25].  After serving most of his term, he was paroled early and he assumed another ID (Justice) [NW #36].     REL:  Son of Arnold and Mary (Norma) Astrovik.

Marvel Girl    (Jean Grey)  Mutant with telekinetic and telepathic powers, one of the original members of the X-Men, was replaced by an alien (Phoenix II) when she supposedly died returning from space, and was later resurrected in time to join her fellow alumnus in their newly formed team, long time love interest and later wife of Cyclops.  After serving for years on the X-Men, with only one brief hiatus after graduating, she and most of the others of the first roster left the fold to pursue their own lives after the events with Krakoa, and Jean continued on with her school work [UXM #94], ushering in the new team.  Her separation this time from the team didn't last, particularly because Cyclops stayed, and she got involved in the affair with Steven Lang's Mark III Sentinels which led to her 'giving her life' for her friends on the shuttle ride back to Earth [UXM #100].  At which time she was replaced by the alien (Phoenix II) which duplicated her in every way and left her in a cocoon in the river near Kennedy Airport to heal from her terrible injuries.  Some time later, after the demise of her duplicate, her cocoon was discovered and she and her former team mates, the original X-Men, formed a new team.      REL:  Daughter of Elaine and John Grey.  Sister of Sara Grey.  Wife of Cyclops.  GA:  X-Men, X-Factor.

Marvel Man FY    In the Forever Yesterday alternate reality, he has the same powers as the Marvel Boy II of our reality and his costume is very similar except that he carries a staff.  He was one of the agents who was bringing the info given them by Sergeant Fury FY back to the rebellion bunker to help in their cause against Sphinx II; he was one of those chosen to infiltrate Maqaman Island to deactivate the Mutant Detection Field, and he was one of the four heroes that finally brought an end to the tyrant's rein.

Mary Beth    A young woman who was frolicking on the beach at Atlantic City with her significant other when she is attacked by a giant squid as a prelude to Attuma's latest attack on the surface world.

Masked Marauder    (Frank Farnum, see:  Big M II) (Deceased)  Costumed criminal mastermind and Maggia leader, his first leap into costumed criminality was to steal the experimental XB-390 engine from the World Motor Center and try to sell it to the highest bidder, but the plan was thwarted by Daredevil and Spider-Man.  He wears a goggled helmet like his underlings, but his is veiled to hide his features and has his Opti-Blast built into it.  Besides his small army of henchmen, the Marauder also has a specially made bus with a hydraulic lift and a blimp in his possession.  Creator of both versions of the Tri-Man.  It wasn't until his supposed death that Farnum was revealed as  MM, and had presumably perished by passing through his own force field [DD1 #27].  But he survived and went to prison and spent the next several months increasing the power of his Opti-Blast making the effects permanent [WW #43].  And when he got out, he finally realized his dreams and became the overall head of the crime syndicate, crating a second Tri-Man and using him to hold the city for ransom until he was taken down by Spider-Man and Daredevil again [SSM #28].  GA:  Maggia.

Masked Marauder's Opti-Blast    (Visi-Blast)  A weapon built into the helmet of criminal mastermind that shoots a ray that temporarily paralyzes the target's optic nerves, causing temporary blindness.  When the Marauder directed the weapon on Daredevil, it of course didn't work.

Masked Matador  (Manuel Eloganto)   Famous Spanish matador turned costumed criminal, wearing his bull fighting togs, his cape and razor sharp sword.  He clashed with Daredevil and was bested.  Later, he was recruited by Electro for his new team of costumed villains, each with a beef with the man without fear, and with the soul purpose of killing their common foe.  The five of them took DD on individually and then all together, but, because they disregarded Electro's carefully laid plans and because of their overconfidence and carelessness, they were beaten and left for the police [DD AN #1].  GA:  Emissaries of Evil.

McGuire, Charlie    (deceased)  A one time cop in Philadelphia who had been kicked off the force who went into personal protection.  While acting as the bodyguard of Mrs. Desiree Vaughn-Pope, she and her 'date' were attacked by who was assumed to be Spider-Man in her apartment at the Powers Arms in Soho.  He fired his weapon and missed and he followed the assailant out onto the balcony, but didn't come back.  He struggled with who turned out to actual be Prowler II and the two went over the rail.  Prowler was able to stop himself from falling, Charlie didn't and fell to his death.  The police of course, despite clues to the contrary, assumed that Spidey was responsible.  Spidey finally brought not only the Prowler but the woman who had hired him, Belladonna to justice.

Meachum, Ward  The spineless son left in charge of Rand-Meachum Industries after the untimely death of his father.  under the nose of his sister, he was using company resources to further his own criminal career under the control of Master Khan.  REL:  Son of Harold Meachum.  Brother of Joy Meachum.

Mechano    (destroyed)  A 27 foot tall remote control robot built by Tinker Hopkins and his assistant Tommy Briggs for an industrial fair, that, when exposed to an atomic transmitter's rays, ran amok under his own power.  The inventor drew him out of town with a giant electro magnet right in the middle of an attempted alien invasion.  Mechano defeated the extraterrestrials, but was destroyed shortly thereafter by the police, who were unaware that the robot had just saved the human race.

Mechano-Assassin    A robot sent by AIM to kill Nick Fury, but it was a set up by SHIELD that was ruined when Captain America unwittingly rescues the Fury LMD by destroying the robot and puts Sharon Carter, who had infiltrated AIM, at risk.

Mechanoid    The latest weapon devised by the military to deal with the threat of the Hulk costing a whopping two and a half million dollars in the early seventies.  It is a golden humanoid robot that can, by remote control, fire force blasts form its hands and missiles from a port in its belly.  The National Guard sicced one on the Hulk when he was trying to reach Dr. Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, and he made very short work of it.  It did little more than annoy him, and he broke it down into very small pieces.

Mechanoid Scout MK-5    (deceased)  (Mike)  A humanoid android sent to Earth by his unseen Masters to deduce whether the Earth was ripe for them to offer a chance to be a trading colony.  In his study of the planet, he abducted Iron Man I, who his ships sensors thought to be a threat, and, taking human form, picked up with a girl named Belinda Thompkins, for whom he developed feelings.  When their car was hijacked by two escaped cons, Rasko and Baldy Kolak, he ended up giving his life to save hers.  The several bullets that passed through his body in the scuffle caused him to explode and he was reduced to ashes.

Medbedah, Araq    The supposedly altruistic leader of the People's Armed Forces Front who were working to free the people of Trans-Sabal from the dictator, Farnoq Dahn.  After he'd conned the New Warriors, who were in the country trying to locate Force of Nature, to help them beat the Sabalian army and capture the villain, the truth came out that he was a paid stooge working for their 'friends to the east' (presumably the Russians) and not even a citizen of the country.  he is the one that killed Gen. Halladah in the skirmish.

Medusa    (Medusalith Amaquelin, 'Madame Medusa')  One of the Royal family of Inhumans who has the uncanny ability to use her hair like tentacles.  Started her career as a villain recruited by the Wizard, but quickly redeemed herself, even joining the Fantastic Four for a short period.  REL:  Wife of Blackbolt.  Sister of Crystal.  Cousin of Gorgon, Triton, and Karnak.  Daughter of  Quelin.  Aunt of Luna.  GA:  Frightful Four, Inhumans, Fantastic Four, Liberators.

Medvedev    One of the Soviet agents who had originally kidnapped Yuri Petrovitch posing as Americans and holding him for nine years in West Berlin never guessing that his own people had taken him.  When the time was right, his boss, the Commissar staged a rescue, during which the bald agent was supposedly gunned down, but it was all just for show to get the boy deeper into the fold.

Mend-Mek    A miniature repair robot employed by the Kree on their starships.  They are also designed to speak and monitor information from elsewhere in the ship.  Medic Una tried to use one to eavesdrop on the main Viso-Viewer on the bridge to get news of Captain marvel I's battle with Sentry 459.

Menoetius    One of the Greco-Roman Titans, who, in the war with his brethren against Olympus, wall felled by the powers of Zeus, and so many of his awesome bolts did he absorb before being cast down to Hades that portions of his body were transformed into living energy.  Besides being huge and super strong, he could also cast bolts of energy from his hands.  It is in this form that he was summoned by the Huntsman to attack the Champions who were preventing him from carrying out his orders from Zeus to capture Hercules and Venus.  The heroes were having a lot of trouble dealing with him without the might of the scion of Olympus, but they bested him when the melting ice of Iceman gave Black Widow the bright idea of short circuiting him by grounding the creature.  Not only was the Titan struck down but his controller as well.

Mentallo    (Marvin Flumm, see:  Think Tank)  Costumed criminal who, by means of mechanical assistance, can take control of other's minds, often partnered with the Fixer.  Was once a side show mentalist, and revealed to be the one who led the fateful mission of the Oracle and betrayed Capt. Leonard McKenzie, locating the Helmet of Power for Destiny I.   Later revealed to be an actual mutant.  GA:  Ex-Hydra agent.  Informant for SHIELD.

Mentor II    One of the Shi'ar elite guard who has no revealed super ability but it has been suggested that he has a superhuman level of intelligence.  He wears a blue and orange body suit, has green skin with a very sunken brow, and wears an amulet on his forehead.  In his first appearance, he and his team mates were protecting Emperor D'Ken Neramani from The X-Men and the Starjammers, who were trying to stop him from destroying the universe.GA:  Imperial Guard.

Mentor III    (form. Man-Beast, see:  Hate-Monger II)  Appearing first as a mystic or alien being, he granted Achmed Korba the power of the light to begin his cult, but with the stipulation, that he must be in contact with someone of pure heart, or his powers don't kick in.  It was in this way that the Man-Beast (in disguise), having escaped from Counter-Earth and crash landed here hoped to gain an army that he could hypnotically subvert, and used this caveat as a safety to keep Korba from reverting to his old smuggling ways and spill the beans prematurely.  Although even those higher up in the cult still believe Mentor to be the man in charge, it is known right along that it is the Hate-Monger who is pulling the strings.  When the whole operation came apart at the hands of Spider-Man, Razorback, and Flash Thompson, he fell as Man-Beast into an explosion caused by his hate amplifier and presumably died [SSM #15].  GA:  Legion of Light.

Menzie, Anne Marie    A nurse who was one of the 100 humans mind controlled by the Kree to commit sabotage to soften the Earth up for invasion..

Mephisto    Extra-dimensional demon with almost unlimited power, lord of the underworld.  Although he can choose other forms, he normally appears as a more classical rendition of Satan minus the bifurcated tail.  Because he is the epitome of evil, anything that is good and pure and displaying the nobler traits is anathema to him, and he must destroy it.  This includes a serious hate on for the Silver Surfer who is so pure of heart, and, in his earlier appearances, has tried often to sway him from the path of goodness through hook and by crook.  However, his animosity isn't saved solely for SS.  He has crossed paths with most of the major characters in the Marvel Universe, most notably Thor and the Fantastic Four, in an attempt to subvert them.  REL:  Father of Blackheart.

Mephisto's Beams of Bondage    Rays emitted by one of Mephisto's constructs that coat an opponent in a casing which freezes them solid.  It was used on Thor when he was accidentally sentenced to the Netherworld when he had been trapped in the body of Loki.

Mephisto's Globules of Madness    Spheroid objects suspended on cords and triggered by trip wires which, when released, produce a number of different threats, including a liquid mystic life force that will try to smother an opponent and a large lizard like creature that emits the Beams of Bondage from it's eyes.  The lord of the Netherworld used them to show his supremacy over Thor who had been accidentally sentenced there by his father, Odin, not realizing that Loki had switched bodies with him.

Mercenary, the    (deceased)  The hired gun who specializes in gadgetry and who is a master of disguise that was brought in to kill Cheryl Porter when she spilled to the authorities about the ship that smuggled Titanium Man into the US.  When the girl went, as expected, to Tony Stark for help, he was able to follow because of the Micro-Wave Spy Monitors (almost undetectable audio bugs) he'd placed in all of Stark's vehicles.  He traces them up to Stark's cabin in the Adirondacks where he eliminates Vincent Sandhurst, who was trying to kill Stark) and gains access to the well defended cabin with an Electro-Static Jamming Device (which shut down all of the electronic security) and tries to take down Iron Man I with a Black-out Mist (a dense fog that makes normal visual contact almost impossible) and a Hallucinogenic Flare (a pistol delivered flash that is supposed to dazzle all the senses).  He locates the girl using a Cardio-Sonic Scanner (a small hand held device designed to locate a hidden subject by their heartbeat), and puts the final kibosh to Iron Man with a Magnetized Block (A device that, when coming in contact with IM's armor, absorbs all the current, making him helpless).  Finally, reaching his target while impersonating Stark himself with special make-up, he doesn't make the hit because the man he left for dead, Sandhurst, shoots him dead thinking he was the real McCoy.

Mercy Killers    The trio of back up singers for the Hypno-Hustler whose sibilant voices, when combined with his special hypnotic goggles are able to completely mesmerize whole crowds of people.  The group traveled from venue to venue using their special powers to not only rob the box office but the patrons as well, all without any of them being the wiser.  It is uncertain whether the girls did the crimes willingly, having been under the spell of HH's goggles, but they were stopped by Spider-Man who first used them to mesmerize their leader and then webbed up their mouths for the police to deal with.

Merle   A small time thug working for the crime boss, Marty who was thwarted while robbing the Municipal Animal clinic in Dover, NH. and one of the vets (Jeff-Anything Man-Colt) returned and gave them a good thrashing with his newly developed powers.

Merlin I    The 6th century mystic and loyal advisor to King Arthur.  The elder sorcerer is first seen when Kang returns to medieval Britain and imprisons him in the first step of taking control of Arthur's court.  The Watcher sends the Thing and Human Torch II back to help.  Torch frees the wizard, and he not only restores Johnny's ability to Flame on, but has the forethought to drain the power from Kang's energizer in his time ship to disable all of the conquerors' future weapons, making victory a breeze.

Merlin II    (see:  Warlock, Maha Yogi) An ancient 'magician' who claimed to be the true Merlin, but his magic really stemmed from his abilities as a mutant capable of telepathy, telekinesis, and Teleportation.  A thousand years ago he set up a 'spell' to foil his enemies that caused him to sleep until his sarcophagus was again opened.  This was done at the New York Museum, where he arose and decided to use his powers to seize control of the current government as he had centuries before.  Thor I, however, after thwarting his attempts to cause havoc at Cape D'Or and in Washington, DC., convinced him that he was the greatest mage of this time, and got him to return to his sarcophagus.  Although this one didn't last the 1000 years, because a short time later he resurfaced as the mystical hypnotist and faced members of the X-Men.

Mesa of Lost Souls    (La Mesa De la Almas Perdidas)    The land mass in the Arizona desert where Warlord Kaa and his shadow warriors chose to kick off their second attempt on invading the Earth.  Even their new ability to take over the minds of humans couldn't save them from the Champions, who not only thwarted their invasion plan but wiped out the fleet in one special blast created by one of Hawkeye's blast arrows and a dose of Hell-fire.

Mesmerizer Wand    A device created by the Rabble Rouser using the Hate Monger's Hatred Ray which which could be used to sap the will of large groups of people.  Used to turn NYC against the Human Torch I, before he captured the Communist agent and melted the device.

Mesmero    A mutant criminal with hypnotic powers, started a Cult in Magneto's name, built a hidden city in the desert, and peopled it with an army of robots with mutant powers called the Demi-Men  First to seek out Lorna Dane mistaking her for Magneto's daughter.  He and his cult were undone by the X-Men [UXM #52].  Later, to get revenge, he not only kidnapped the existing old members but the new line up as well, and hypnotized them all and stuck them in the Mr. Mike's One-Ring traveling Tents Show as performers and side show acts.  When the deal finally went south thanks to the interference of the Beast, he was prepared to take the restored X-Men on, but was taken out with a cheap shot by Magneto [UXM #111]

Metalloid    A high temperature metallic android probably made by the Mad Thinker.  After coming to life inside a bank vault, it went on a very brief rampage before being destroyed by the Thing and Tigra.

Metallo-Net    A specialized fishing net used by Dr. Walter Newell's team to capture the Sub-Mariner after he lost his ability to fly and breathe under water.

Metal Master    An Astran with the ability of mental control over all metals, tried to conquer Earth but was stopped by a trick enacted by the Hulk and the newly formed Teen Brigade.

Metazoid    (Deceased) (XM-1)  A Russian citizen found guilty of anti-state crimes, given a reprieve if he accepts to do dangerous space research.  His body chemistry is altered so he becomes this super strong almost invulnerable blue monster.  Told he would be returned to human if he captured the US scientist Dr. Walter Lawson from the Cape.  Was killed by Captain Marvel I (who was impersonating the Dr.) with a rigged X-ray machine.

Meteor Man    (deceased)  (Norman G. Fester, form. the Looter)  The costumed criminal who derives his powers from the meteorites he steals.  He is super strong, and wears a red and white costume, and is fond of making his escapes with giant helium filled balloons.  After first clashing with Spider-Man and going to jail, he came out with a name more fitting his crimes and continued trying to collect more and more meteors with which to experiment.  This time, he ran afoul of the Defenders and was stopped again.  On his third outing, he hit ESU again, only this time to steal certain Microwave components to finish his machine with which he could access the power from his meteors directly.  He managed to sneak them out  past not only Spidey but Giant-Man II as well, get them back to his lab in Hell's Kitchen, and finish his device before the heroes caught up with him.  The device fed power directly into a back pack receiver and not only gave him increased strength, but allowed him to grow to gigantic stature.  The machine however was ill-conceived and soon malfunctioned, hitting him with a burst of feedback that knocked him, even at the fifty foot height, into the sky, where the device explode, killing him.

Mickey    One of the operators at the toll plaza outside the Hudson Tunnel who were witness to the attack made upon the tunnel by hundreds of thousands of fish sent by Eelar.  His partner, Ferdie, who was always spouting off about wanting action, froze in terror when the roof started to collapse.

Microbe 201-B    A microbe from the Negative Zone, that was being tested by Reed Richards, which, grew to enormous size when Quasimodo caused the Fantastic Four's computers to allow it to thaw.  The creature was only susceptible to a concentrated saline solution.

Micronauts    A term first coined by Mr. Fantastic referring to anyone exploring the new frontier of Sub-Atomica, when he, Human Torch II and the Thing enter the microscopic universe searching for the Silver Surfer.

Micronauts    A term first used for Commander Arcturus Rann when he set off 1000 years ago in the HMS Endeavor to explore the limits of the Microverse.  Upon his return to a world dominated by the tyrant Baron Karza, he took on a team of freedom fighters dedicated to stopping the evil man and his minions and the spread of his blight acrross their universe.  Later, after the fall of Karza, they became a team of explorers and adventurers.   Team consists of:  Com. Midas    The hugely over weight criminal mastermind whose main goal in life is to do whatever it takes to increase his already vast wealth.  He originally teamed up with Madame Masque in a bid to replace Tony Stark and harvest Stark Industries.  He normally wears clothing that is reminiscent of ancient Greece, and, because of his size, he uses a hovering platform as his mode of transportation.

Midgard Serpent    (Jormungand)  The enormous snake, according to Norse mythology, that surrounds the Earth with it's coils that will become active during Ragnarok, the end of everything, fabled to be found chewing on the roots of Yggdrasil.  The serpent is green with blank, round red eyes.  REL:  Son of Loki.  Brother of Hela and Fenris Wolf.

Midget    One of the Shi'ar elite guard who has the power to shrink her body down to 1/20th of her normal stature (and possibly smaller).  Her costume is maroon and black with light blue swashbuckler boots, and besides her red hair being puffed into a large flower like ball, she appears perfectly human.  In his first appearance, he and his team mates were protecting Emperor D'Ken Neramani from The X-Men and the Starjammers, who were trying to stop him from destroying the universe.  GA: Imperial Guard.

Midnight    (deceased)  (see:  Midnight Sun)  A master of kung fu second only to Shang Chi (his half brother through Fu Manchu) who was killed by the young martial arts expert who cleanly broke his neck  Later, his body was resurrected along with Wonder Man (AV1 #131-2) after which, somehow, the Kree got a hold of his copse and put it on ice until they could find a use for it.  They did finally during the second Kree-Skrull War when they reanimated him and augmented him as a weapon to directly counter the Silver Surfer.  REL:  Half brother of Shang Chi.  Grandson of Fu Manchu.

Midnight's Fire    (Midnight's Fire Chord)  A super powered hero turned criminal, he has augmented strength and speed that lift his considerable martial arts abilities to a formidable level.  He wears some body armor, and sports a Mohawk with a long braided pony tail.  In the past, he worked with his sister breaking up small time gangs operating in his neighborhood, using the girl as bait to infiltrate the various operations, and soon, they had joined with a newbie hero, Dwayne Taylor, and formed his first crime fighting team.  Unfortunately, one night an operation went bad; an unexpected police officer arrived on the scene.  His partner stopped him from killing the cop to save his sister, and the girl was caught in the resultant crossfire.  In his anger, he slashed the face of Taylor and rushed to his sister's aid.  He got her what medical care he could manage, but she was left without the use of her legs, for which he blamed Taylor.  Some time later, he surfaced again, but at the head of a protection racket in his old neighborhood, and made the news after killing three police officers.  He left a note that would attract  the attention of his old partner, and soon Taylor, now Night Thrasher and head of the New Warriors obliged.  While Fire and Thrasher duked it out, the rest of the Warriors dealt with fire's new gang, who were outfitted with weaponry from AIM.  During the fight, twice Thrasher was in a position to kill his rival, but in the end, satisfied himself with leaving a scar similar to his on Fire's face.  In the end, his people, who learned this had all been an extortion racket, and his own sister turned against him, and he was handed over to the police.  After serving several month s on Rikers Island, he was sprung by the Left Hand as part of his new team all of whom he promised the truth about their existence.  The truth turned out to be that he and his sister were part of some selective breeding program devised by the Dragon's Breadth Cult to create super powerful beings capable of seizing control of the Well of All Things and the world per their prophesies and machinations set in motion by his grandmother.  When they were still young, their mother faked their death and placed them in an orphanage in hopes of their escaping the clutches of the Cult, but he was identified and recruited by the Hand (so he could seize the power for himself) and the beans were spilt prematurely.  REL:  Brother of Silhouette.  Son of Andrew and Miyami Chord.  Grandson of Tai.  GA:  Folding Circle.

Midnight Sun    (see:  Midnight)  The master of kung fu that had his neck cleanly broken by Shang Chi, kept frozen by the Kree in a warehouse on Bodoni-20 until they had need of him, and was revived, years later, by the Scientist, Kar-Sagg, who rebuilt his body, repairing the spinal injury and enhanced with hypertronics to increase his speed and strength.  They regrew his brain in nutrients chosen to enhance his physical upgrades and replaced the personality and memories with ones to suit their purposes (removing his ability to speak), all to counter the power of the Silver Surfer during the second Kree-Skrull War.  His outfit is a body suit of dark red finished with a slouch hat and cape, and his hands and feet are fitted with discs that allow him to negotiate even the void of space.  He was pitted against the Surfer twice during the war.  Once simply as a diversion to keep him distracted from the main battle between the Kree and the Empress S'Byll which ended before either could win, and the second, in the skies above Hala, the actual real combat between the two, where the new construct, even with his enhanced martial art skills, couldn't compete with the power cosmic.  He was rescued by his creator, who was going to start all over with him and wipe the few wisps of memory he still maintained, but he broke free of the lab, with Kar-Sagg's help and went on a mission of discovery to find out who he really is (SS3 AN #4).

Miller, Casey    (Mr. Casey)  The owner of a rodeo outfit and ranch near the Copperhead Canyon who was to sponsor the Crash Simpson Daredevil Cycle Show, from which, Ghost Rider IV was to jump the canyon as their finale.  When the local Apache tribe began to put the kibosh to the jump, his lack of concern at first made him a suspect to the sabotage, but it was chalked up to the fact that he didn't cotton to having motorcycles involved in a rodeo.  He is sometimes erroneously called Mr. Casey.

Milner, Katy    (see:  Roxanne Simpson)  A Hollywood stunt person who was hired on at Delazny Studios to be Karen Page's stunt double.  She develops a crush on Johnny Blaze during the shooting and even arranges lodgings for him with friends of hers, Wendy and Richard Pini.  During a particularly difficult stunt, she is wounded by the Orb who was trying to kidnap Karen, and the head injury leaves her wide open to an attack from demons who possess her.  Johnny calls in  his old friend, Son of Satan to perform an exorcism  which works but isn't her biggest problem.  The arch demon, Challenger is the cause of the whole matter and Ghost Rider IV is forced to ride an infernal gauntlet to save her life.  When the demon is defeated, Katy is revealed to be Johnny's long time love, Roxanne Simpson.

Mimic    (Deceased)  (Calvin Rankin)  A genetically altered human who is uncontrollably able to mimic the powers of other beings, as long as he is in proximity with them, originally a bad guy, later became (briefly) the team leader of the X-Men.  Created by his father, Dr. Ronald Rankin, who also built a machine to reverse the process.  He is not a mutant.

Mind Eraser    A Kree device used to either erase portions of someone's memory, or, under extreme circumstances, completely wipe someone's mind.  Sent to Yon-Rogg by Ronan to use on Captain Marvel I if his actions continued to prove un-Kree and traitorous, first used by CM to remove the memories of Mr. Logan, who had guessed his real identity.

Mindless Ones    The large powerful almost amorphous  creatures that exist in the dimension adjacent to the Dark Dimension by a very fragile barrier kept in check by the power of the Ruler of the Dark Dimension.  Their only purpose is to destroy anything in their vicinity.

Mind Monitor    (Destroyed)  A super computer, using a holographic form of a demonic creature for a front, who was the head of the Brotherhood of Hades.  Wanted to capture Mister Machine and study him to help it to achieve universal mind control over the human race.  It is destroyed when the X-Model robot set the machine to self destruct.

Mind Shock    A last resort doomsday device powered by the Great Pit of the Body Banks which was intended to destroy all of Homeworld when Baron Karza faced defeat.  But the device back fired and Karza's disembodied spirit was cast into the Pit.

Mindtrap Mechanism    A small device created by the White Queen that enabled Mastermind to expand his powers in a psychic direction, allowing his to cause the Timeslips that enabled him to subvert Phoenix II to his will as the Black Queen.  When she regained her own will, she used the device to expand his mind even further to encompass the whole universe, which left him mentally broken.

Mindworm    (William Turner)  A mentally distressed and physically distorted person with the ability to siphon emotions from those around him and feed off of them, growing stronger from their minds and souls, sort of a psychic parasite.  He was also able to mentally control others and could telepathically create realistic images in others' minds.  Holed up in a shack in Queens, he went up against Spider-Man and lost when the web slinger popped his ear drums, stifling his hearing and his psychic connection.  Unable to draw sustenance, he began to starve to death and was brought to the hospital where he lay death-like for months until he was able to focus his mind and tore through the barriers that keep most men from utilizing their full brain capacity.  He then employed this new power to run Spidey through a deadly labyrinth in hopes of gaining revenge, but what resulted was his finally facing the deep seated guilt of having accidentally killed his parents as a child when he hadn't had full control of his burgeoning powers.  When he was through, it turned out the whole matter had been a sort of dream, and Mindworm was ready for the first time to take responsibility for his actions and his powers.  Included in the dream was the image of his nurse whom he had raised to the status of doctor and for whom he has feelings [SSM #35].

Minerva, Doctor    Kree geneticist who was fiercely loyal to the Supreme Intelligence.  Long time partner with Capt. Atlas, early on very often at odds with Captain Marvel I.   During the Kree-Shi'Ar War, she was thought to have died when Atlas faked his own suicide (AV1 #347).  In fact, the pair has deserted and slinked off to an out of the way pastoral planet to be the parents of a new race of supermen to restart the Kree Empire with their superior genes (SS3 #79).  Minerva wears a costume similar to Captain Marvel with the red and blue bodysuit with the star on the chest and a blue diamond mask.

Minotaur II    (Myklos Vryolak) The son of a scientist who became deathly ill as a child, but was saved by his father's new potion designed to make a master race.  However, the potion had side effects, and, not only did the boy brow larger and stronger than someone his age, he also developed the attributes of a minotaur, the legs, horned head and temperment of a bull.  Later,  he is the unwilling pawn of his father, using his appearance and strength to gain money for his father's research.  REL:  Son of Dr. Vryolak.

Missing Link    (Lincoln)  A man who was subjected to radioactive experimentation by an Oriental Communist nation (and delivered on US soil via an X-Capsule from one of their freighters) that emits deadly amount of radiation and hungers for conflict.  If the radiation is not released, it causes a chain reaction which causes it to explode.  It is super strong but possesses an instability that allows great force to shatter its crystalline makeup, which the Hulk took full advantage of in their second encounter to shatter it into thousands of pieces.  It also has the ability to reform its shape over time, and eventually settles peacefully in a small mining town where it is cured of its radioactive curse by Rom.

Mr. Buda    (see:  Contemplator)    The name used by the Contemplator when he assisted Captain America I in his dilemma on the country's bicentennial of finding the true meaning of being an American.  He took Cap, unwillingly at first (planting a Psychic Talisman to transport him), to different key time periods for the country's past and then into the future, but when the message wouldn't sink, he left him to the tender mercies of some children, and he learned the true meaning.  It is uncertain whether he was actually  in those time periods or if the whole trip was just an illusion.

Mr. Buda's Energy Pyramid    The ornate glass cabinet employed by the contemplator to help him in the process of astral projection.  One side of the cabinet open, and the inside is cushioned for his body while he's journeying elsewhere.

Mr. Buda's Psychic Talisman    The device the Contemplator placed in the palm of Captain America I which took him from time period to time period when he was trying to reestablish Cap's belief in his country and what it meant to be an American.  It was a triangle inscribed in a small circle which glowed when it was ready to transport him elsewhere.  When the lesson was almost done, the sigil began to fade, until it disappeared completely.

Mr. Doll    A costumed villain who bested Iron Man I so sorely in his old boiler plate armor that he nearly gave up being a costumed hero.  Instead, he created his new lighter weight red and gold armor and bested the fellon.

Mister Fear II    (see:  Samuel 'Starr' Saxon, Machinesmith)  Businessman who, with his incredible mechanical abilities, created a weapon that could augment the emotion of fear to a crippling level and chose to use it against humanity. Also created a flying platform to better deliver this menace.  Planted time release fear pellets in Daredevil's billy club and then challenged him to a public confrontation to discredit him by making him appear cowardly.  Took a header off his platform and was assumed dead, and it wasn't until his death that it was realized that this was not the original Mr. Fear.

Mr. Mike's One-ring Traveling Tent Show    The traveling carnival that featured the talents of the X-Men, who had been hypnotized into service by Mesmero.  Wolverine became the Man-Best of the Yukon in the freak show, Storm became a wild woman in the freak show, and Nightcrawler a demon for the same, and Colossus a steel skinned strong man, where Phoenix II became a flaming aerialist known as Ms. Destiny, with Slim (Cyclops) Summers as her handler.  When Beast came looking for them via Cerebro, he approached Phoenix first an was rebuffed and captured by the other roustabouts, but his rough handling broke Wolverine free of his conditioning; and he was able to free the rest.  It is uncertain whether there was ever a Mr. Mike or if the whole arrangement was orchestrated by Mesmero to get his revenge on the team form their interference in his Magneto Cult (UXM #52).  When it was first seen, it was operating in Sullivan County in Texas.   Staff members include, Mesmero, Ms. Destiny, Slim Summers, Man-Best of the Yukon, Nick Jukie, Bruno, Georgie, Willis, Georgie, Billy-Boy, Lotta Little [first seen members].

Mr. Nebul    (see:  Nebulon)  In his return to Earth after his first defeat by the Defenders he used the power of his people and disguised himself as a nondescript little man and began a movement he believed would be in the best interest of the human race, a plan to take control over all their minds using Celestial Mind Control, leaving them blissfully happy and care free.  After his first seminar making bozos out of people failed, he teamed up with Chondu and began to spread his cult all over the globe.  As his followers spead across the globe, he nearly was appointed as a member of the UN council.

Mister Rasputin    The descendant of the infamous Russian monk, this criminal sorcerer began stealing state secrets using illusions and reselling them to the highest bidder in his bid toward world domination.  When he was detected by Doctor Strange, he was unable to defeat the more powerful wizard, so he shot the Sorcerer Supreme with a gun, and even sent an assassin to kill him in the hospital.  However, even in his weakened state, Strange defeated Rasputin, wiped his mystical knowledge, and commanded him to confess his crimes to the police.  The mage returned later as an image in a spell cast by Clea as basically a shadowy outline of what he had been.  This time, he nearly defeated Strange, and might have if not for the timely intervention of the Sub-Mariner, who shattered the purple silhouette [GS DEF #1].

Mister Sinister    An evil mutant telepath whose main goal in life is, through clever manipulation, to promote the eventual dominance of mutant kind.  He is a skilled genetic engineer, can create powerful memory blocks in others, and has been very interested in the Summer's family gene pool (Havok and Cyclops since before they even became X-Men).  Creator of the Jean Grey clone, Madelyne Pryor, and leader of the Marauders.  Sinister is particularly susceptible to the optic blasts of Cyclops.

Mist-Men    The inhabitants of the Sargasso Sea, all mariners who had become marooned in the seaweed choked graveyard of ships, ranging in time from ancient Egypt to more modern sailors.  They are named such because of the strange mist that surrounds the Sargasso and grants them all immortality.  Led by the first denizen, Nakhbet, they had a long standing treaty with the Atlanteans, until it was broken when the Mist-Men destroyed Warlord Thakos' vessel while searching for Tiger Shark.  The villain quickly usurped the leadership of the closed society, and led them to their doom when they ventured outside the mist.  Now only Nakhbet remains.

Mitchell    A man in NYC who, when he expressed concern for he and his girlfriend, Cissy's welfare when she decided to take a canoe ride in Central Park in the dark was derided by her for being a sissy, but she soon ate her words when they were both kidnapped not by muggers but by the Ludberdite henchmen of Nebulon and taken to the island where his Celestial Mind Control machine was set up and used for a battery like the others to power it.

Mjolnir    The mystical Uru hammer of Thor, commissioned by Odin, forged by the Trolls, can summon storms and at one time could bridge dimensions, also allows Thor to "fly".  The hammer must not leave Thor's hands for more than 60 seconds or he will revert to human, and, if able, the hammer always returns to his hands.  No one other than Thor, the Destroyer,  and Odin can pick up the hammer, no matter their strength.

M'Kraan Crystal    An huge ancient crystal that, on a certain day when the Deathstars align becomes a gateway to the Neutron Galaxy, and if it ever is breeched, it could cause the end of the universe and unravel reality.  It is guarded by powerful robots starting with the smallest, Jahf, who, if unable to stop an invader, is replaced by a robot 1000 times as powerful as he is, namely Modt, and if he should fail, another 1000 time stronger would replace him and so on. In a bid for more power, the emperor of the Shi'ar empire, D'ken Neramani gained access to the Crystal, and only the supreme efforts of the X-Men, and particularly Phoenix II, the Crystal is repaired and the universe saved, but D'ken is driven insane in the process.

Mnemonic Scrambler    A device created by Hank (Beast) McCoy that  was supposed to scramble the mind of Dark Phoenix to keep her from forming coherent thoughts much less accessing her telekinetic powers so that they could subdue her.  While she was off guard, Nightcrawler managed to place the head band on her and it worked to a point.  Although she couldn't access her telekinetic powers, she was still to powerful to apprehend, and she eventually overloaded the device and burned it out.

Mobspawn    One of Reptyl's Space Pirates.  More humanoid than many of his brethren, it is hinted that he is romantically involved with Lilita and is sort of friends with Clumsy Foul-up.  He wears a bandana tied around his head, has an ear-ring and wears a sidearm.

Modred the Mystic    A 6th century mystic, emissary of Chthon.

Modt    The second guardian robot in defense of the gateway created when the M'Kraan Crystal is breeched.  After the failure of Jahf, the gigantic robot that is supposedly 1000 times more powerful than his predecessor takes his place.  If the huge automaton should fail, supposedly another 1000 times stronger would replace him and so on.  After the X-Men defeated the nearly invulnerable Jahf, who had appeared after D'Ken Neramani managed to breech the Crystal, Modt was activated.  The X-Men and the Starjammers didn't stand a chance against him, and if they hadn't got access to the inside early in the fight, they'd have been smudges on a no name planet.  none of the robots are allowed to follow them inside, and once having been inside, the guardians disappear.

Moe    One of Belladonna's thugs who were helping her to get revenge on Roderick Kingsley.  During their first appearance, they wore stocking masks which hid their faces and the special respirators needed so they weren't affected by their boss' gas gun, black turtle neck shirts and purple slacks.  They weren't particularly well trained or well armed, just your run of the mill hired muscle.  After they rescued their boss from her other hired thug, Prowler II, they were easily subdued by Spider-Man and handed over to Det. Sgt. Snider.

Mogol    A giant robot employed by Tyrannus, destroyed by the Hulk, who had been brought to Subterranea as a dupe to fight the Mole Man.

Mogul (of the Mystic Mountain)   (deceased)  The warlock and evil tyrant of Xandu, who took over and enslaved their surrounding countrymen, including Hogun's homeland, threatened to release the Spotted Plague to exterminate his people when Thor and the Warriors Three tried to unseat him in his stronghold in the Mystic Mountains.  On top of his magical abilities, technological weaponry, and numerous servants and warriors, he was master of the Jinni Devil, Sulibeg, Mutaurus, and Satan's 40 Horsemen, all of whom he pitted against his besiegers.  In the end, he was destroyed by one of his own enchanted crystals wielded by Alibar and enhanced by Hogun's spell of temporal force.

Mojo    The evil, obese, spineless ruler of Mojoworld, whose single purpose of existence involved entertaining himself with twisted television shows, usually involving deadly confrontation between unwilling participants, but he was not content being the absolute ruler of the parallel dimension and often tried to force his reign to Earth.  He was killed by his successor, Mojo II.

Molecule Man    (Owen Reece)  Probably one of the most powerful criminals on Earth, able to rearrange molecules of non-living things at will, created in a freak nuclear accident, uses his Molecular Wand to amplify and direct his powers.  Identified by the lighting bolt marks across his face.  For a time, he was imprisoned in his Wand (IM AN #3) and was searching for a new host body, entering Aaron Skankey, and Reed Richards [FF1 #187],.

Mole Man    A former nuclear engineer who, because of his odd appearance was driven out by society and sought refuge in the bowels of the Earth, now the leader of the Moloid Subteraneans and head of his own kingdom, he often seeks revenge on the surface world, rival of Tyrranus and Kala for supreme rulership of Subterranea.  He is rarely seen without his staff in which he has secreted a multitude of controls.

Mole Man's Android    Incredibly powerful robot created by the combined genius of the Mole Man and the technology of Kala's Netherworld.  Sicced on the Fantastic Four when they attacked his HQ on the eve of his wedding. it is presumed destroyed.

Molten Man    (Mark Raxton)  While working with Spencer Smythe, Raxton's skin is coated with an experimental metal which makes him almost impervious and allows him to emit great amounts of heat, eventually the alloy penetrates his skin and causes his actual body to burn instead of just the coating.  REL:  Step-brother of Liz Allen (Osborn).  Nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Allen.

Molto    (Deceased)  (the Lava Man)  The Lava Man who was brought to the surface through a volcano by Loki to pit against his half brother, Thor I.  The god of mischief used Molto's people's envy of the surface world to get him to go on a rampage that eventually brought him to NYC, where he was eventually stopped by the thunder god and returned to his volcano.  When he next appeared, it was as an ally to the Avengers trying to stop the attack of Jinku and his tribe.

Mondani    An alien race who very much resemble humans except that their ears are slightly pointed, their skin is red, and they don't have visible pupils in their eyes.  Because of their ability to resist diseases for extended periods, a child of their race was used by the Collector to house a deadly virus.  When his ship was pulled apart by the Brethren, she escaped and somehow fled to a spaceport in the Byrulian System, where she was hunted down by the Silver Surfer and the Collection Agency, both working for the Collector.

Mongu    What started out as a gladiator from outer space turned out to be a robotic battle suit filled with communist soldiers to lure the Hulk to his doom.

Monocle, the    (deceased)  Foreign agent, sporting a monocle, who came to NYC disguised as a member of the Foreign Press Corp. with his Neutrak Ray to stop the UN Summit meeting and "ignite the world in atomic chaos".  He managed to infiltrate the meeting, but was stopped by the Fantastic Four and handed over to the authorities.  Later, working for the Enclave, he hypnotizes the entire Security University campus using a ray from his monocle.  When the plan goes wrong, uncovered by Spider-Man and the Human Torch II, he is killed by his unhappy employers while trying to escape.

Monster Master    (Toru Tarakato)  A research scientist at Fujiyama Electronics that made a deal with the Red Chinese to use their Zoga device, but with the intent to drive out the American influence flooding his island.  He wore a costume that resembles samurai armor, and was bested by Iron Man.

Monster of Lost Lagoon and Mate    Quons who crash landed in their spacecraft in Lost Lagoon, and caused the navy to bring in the Fantastic Four to investigate when he began sinking ships mistaking them as a threat to his mate.  They were allowed to leave the planet unmolested.  They return when the Mate contracts an Earth virus and they must seek out Earth medical treatment.

Mon-Tee    The annoyingly cheerful host of the show Super-Death Sweepstakes on the hedonistic planet ruled by emperor Goozot and under the Badoon thumb.  Wearing a loud suit and an enormous bowtie, he not only hosts the show but he does the play by play as the contestants are being torn limb from limb by the different life threatening challenges.  he was nearly splattered by the Hulk, who had survived his tussle with thousands of mechanical giant ants, but was rescued when Dr. Strange teleported him and his compatriot, Yondu, away.

Montesi, Dean    One of the Dean of sciences at ESU who had introduced the speaker for their alternate energy sources symposium, Dr. Bill Foster (aka Giant-Man II).  When it was announced that Spider-Man was battling Meteor Man on campus, he couldn't hold the meeting together.

Mon-Tog    The Kree officer who took command of the Asteroid Web Station shortly before it was destroyed.  His station was invaded by the Inhumans, Warkon, and his Demon Rebels when he fought Black Bolt with his Neuro-Lance but lost.  In the end, the Station was destroyed killing Mon-Tog and his whole command.

Montoya, Alejandro    (see:  Aguila)

Monty   One of the locals in the small mid western town that was plagued by giant vampire Hell-Bats who was gathered by Jake as a posse to lynch Ghost Rider IV whom he had seen falling from the sky (after battling said bats) and change to human.  They were worried that hanging might no work, so they were prepared to shoot, burn or do whatever it took to put him down.  Their plan was interrupted by the timely appearance of the local sheriff.

Moon-Boy    In an alternate universe, a pre-historic youth, who is a member of the Small-folk in the Valley of Flame, and who, because of his superior intelligence, rescued a baby Devil Beast (tyrannosaurus) and raised it so that later, he and the Devil Dinosaur were the heroes of their little piece of pre-civilization.  GA:  Fallen Angels.

Moondark    An evil magician who had his soul stolen by dark beings and, using his Soul Orb he fashioned from material from this world and the next, he tried to steal the soul of Ghost Rider IV to ransom his back.  He wears a turban and has his eyes blacked out with diamonds above and below the sockets and his powers allow him to cast powerful mystic bolts from his hand, create powerful mystic shackles, create the illusion that he is someone else, and to produce mystical animals (colored a grayish purple) which he can make do his bidding.  His first attempt at GR's soul failed when, with the help of Spider-Man, his Orb was destroyed and he was consigned to the netherworld where they expected him to remain.  Some months later, he returned with a new Orb and made another attempt at GR, but he failed a second time when the demon had help from the newly formed Phantom Rider III.  With a wall of Hell-fire between hi and his crystal weapon, he was forced to retreat back to the nether world [GHR2 #56].

Moondragon    (Heather Douglas, form:  Madame MacEvil)  An incredibly powerful telepath, who, because of her pride and arrogance, has often fluctuated back and forth between the right and wrong side of the law.  She has a bald head and a very skimpy costume, with boots and gloves and a high collared cape, all of the same color green.  She started life as the daughter of a talented jazz musician in Reno, Nevada who was orphaned when her family was on vacation and accidentally encountered Thanos who was on a secret reconnaissance mission.  The mad Titan destroyed the car to eliminate witnesses, killing both parents.  She was rescued by Mentor, who had been following his son and brought back to Titan, where she was raised and trained to be a telepath by the Kabula sect of monks.  After she had completed her training, having defeated the Titan Moondragon, her fiery temper and strong will soon had her abandon her adopted world and seek vengeance on the mad Titan.  Her journey took her to Earth, where as Madam MacEvil, her egotistical personality caused her to clash with Iron Man (IM1 #54) forcing her to live the life of an outlaw for a time.  Later, however, she rejoined the forces of good when she helped Captain Marvel I against the mad Titan, who had captured one of the Cosmic Cubes, but it wasn't until after the second foray against Thanos, when he was turned to stone, that she was invited to be a member of the Avengers.  But it didn't last long until her pride forced her to leave the group and seek her fortune in space, where she eventually switched sides again and attempted to enslave the Ba-Bani with her telepathic gifts, figuring that her superior breeding gave her the right.  The Avengers, with the help of Drax the Destroyer, attempted to wrest control of the planet from her, and in the process, she killed Drax by destroying his brain (AV1 #220).  Realizing that she had just committed patricide, she lost all resolve to continue the conflict, and she was imprisoned for her actions.  After she had convinced her captors that she had reformed, she was allowed tentative membership on the Defenders, but with a band on her head that limited her telepathic abilities.  Later, after assisting in the war to stop Thanos who had captured the Infinity Gems and had wiped out half the universe, she was given the Mind Gem, when Adam Warlock, who ended up with the Infinity Gauntlet was ordered to divest himself of godhood, to protect it and keep it form future misuse.  It granted her exponentially increased telepathic and telekinetic power and she reluctantly became a member of the Watch.   REL:  Daughter of Arthur (Drax) and Yvette Douglas.  Cousin of Sundragon.  GA:  Avengers, Defenders, Infinity Watch.

Moon Knight    (Marc Spector, 'Fist of Khonshu', 'Steven Grant', 'Jake Lockley') Costumed hero granted power by an ancient Egyptian god, uses various aliases, including the rich playboy and the cab driver.  His costume is all white with a cape, and he uses various tools in his fight against crime and injustice, most notably his crescent boomerangs.  He often works with the man named Frenchie (Jean-Paul DuChamp) who is not only his long time friend but his most trusted aide and pilot as well, his girl friend, Marlene Alraune, Bertram Crawley, and Ray and Rick Johnson, sons of a local diner owner.  Early in his career, he was believed to be one of the bad guys even by some of the other costumed vigilantes.   REL:  Son of Elias Spector.  Brother of Randall Spector.

Morani    An advanced warlike humanoid race from the planet Moran whose prodigious armada, under the command of Warlord Wrogg, had conquered all of Sector 14X except for the Watcher that resided there. The gigantic, green warriors where body armor and helmets with various sized horns attached, and they have discovered the secret of harnessing the energy from their own blood cells and can emit it in the form of a bio-electric shock.  Members include:  Warlord Wrogg, his Marshall and their armada.

Mordred the Evil    (Deceased)  An evil 6th century mystic, caused the Death of Black Knight I and King Arthur.  Assuming human form again in the 12th century an allying himself with Prince John, they imprisoned king Richard, causing the spirit of the Black Knight III (in limbo since his body was turned to stone) to be drawn to that time period.  Between him and the Defenders (there to rescue Dane) and the untimely appearance of Prester John, they were defeated and properly punished [DEF #11].  REL:  Son of Arthur.  Nephew of Morgan Le Fey.

Morg    The huge, brutishly strong alien who was the court executioner on the planet that caused the final rift between Galactus and Nova II.  When the Devourer consumed the planet, he rescued the defiant axe-wielding creature and imbued him with the power cosmic (a larger dose than his others) and created his newest Herald, with spiked armor, a rockier texture to his scaly hide, and scintilating with power.  Morg proved to be just what Galactus wanted in a servant, unquestioningly loyal and ruthless and amoral in his duties choosing planets for his consumption.  He soon fell out of favor with his master when he exponentially augmented his already great power by immersing himself in the Well of Life, and was the cause of the contention with all of the past Heralds (killing Nova II in the process).  As punishment, he removed the power cosmic from him long enough for the others to believe that they had killed him, and even took the Air-Walker and Firelord as replacements while he rejuvenated his remains.

Morgan, Mr.    A small time crime boss operating out of Harlem who had visions of grandeur which were often put down by the Falcon.  Later, after the Kingpin and hammerhead left a power vacuum in the city, he made a bid for power and ended up clashing not only with Spider-Man, but with the Vulture I, who also wanted a slice of the pie [SSM #4].

Morvania    A small European country that had been under the rule of the tyrant, Draxon, until it was freed by the Hulk.  Other inhabitants include Rachel, Rebecca, and Isaac.  The people mistook Hulk for the Golem, and in the end they killed Draxon.  Her only seaport (through which the Hulk arrived as a stowaway) is Vastopol.

Moses, Amos    (see:  Xemnu the Titan)  The disguise taken by the Titan posing as the mayor of Plucketville to lure the Defenders into a death trap.  He even gave them a guided tour before having them beaten into submission by the towns people.

Motherboard 49.7    The central conceptual unit of a massive computer of an unnamed crystalline planet.  It represents itself as a blue skinned armored female (presumably of the race that originally built the complex) and, by it's outdated records, it still believes the Silver Surfer to be a Herald of Galactus.  So, when the unsuspecting ex-herald came near the planet, 49.7 perceived him as a threat and began a series of automated attacks on him in the sake of self preservation.  The Surfer entered the planet and confronted 49.7 face to screen, but he couldn't make the alien intelligence understand how things had changed with him since their records had been last updated.  Literally almost cutting him to pieces with a broad beam laser weapon, the Surfer saves himself by damaging the file pertaining to him.  Having no other recourse, the computer released the Surfer, but when last seen was repairing her system error.

Mount Avarice    In the realm of Mephisto, a mountainous collection of all those who were more concerned with themselves than others and are forced to be tangled with one another  in a writhing mass of self desires for all eternity as a testament to the baseness of human nature.  Zarathos and Johnny Blaze were forced to cross this barrier when they were made to race through the netherworld.  As Blaze crossed, he began to have self doubts and was nearly dragged down into the forever twining mass.  Worse yet, the mount is able to move, and it pursues them toward the only portal of escape.

Ms. Destiny    (see:  Phoenix II)  When Phoenix and the other members of the X-Men had been hypnotized by Mesmero and placed as members of the Mr. Mike's One-Ring Traveling Tent Show, she was positioned as a tough as nails  aerialist who could rescue herself from death defying falls with her own powers.  When first approached by Beast, who had hunted the team down using Cerebro, she had his booted by her handler, Slim Summers, but later, when she was confronted by a restored Wolverine, he pressed her into overcoming the mental block at the risk of life and limb.

Ms. Hunter's Dance Academy    The small dance studio on the second floor of the Comton Building in Salem Center that is owned and operated by one time famous dancer, Stevie Hunter.  As a surprise to help Kitty Pryde relate to 'normal' kids her own age, Prof. X enrolled her here, and she was often escorted by Storm to her sessions.  Later, many of the New Mutants attended classes here.

Municipal Animal Shelter    An animal rescue and clinic facility in Dover, NH. operated by Dr. Corey and Dr. Jeff Colt that functions mostly on donations.  And, even though they didn't have much n the way of money, it was the target of a bold daylight robbery by Tony, Merle, and Phil, henchmen of the small time crime boss Marty.  They were thwarted by the unexpected appearance of Colt, who had recently developed a new super power as Anything Man.

Murder Module    (Tripodal Observation Module or T.O.M.)  A sophisticated piece of machinery developed by the US Army and placed in the hands of Gen. Ross which consists of a domed control compartment mounted on three thirty foot legs.  It can essentially go anywhere, and is equipped with a force beam apparatus which "gives it the firepower of a whole division".  the Leader steals it briefly and tries to unsuccessfully use it on the Hulk.

Murray    One of the Hellfire Club Mercenaries who was viciously and critically wounded by Wolverine during his one man siege of the prestigious club to free his captured team mates, the X-Men.  He was one of those in the initial assault in the sub basement when Wolverine broke back into the prestigious club after being left for dead in the sewers.

Mutant Detection Field    In the Forever Yesterday alternate reality, it is the protective shield placed around Maqaman Island to protect the capital of the United States of Assyria and its tyrannical leader, Sphinx II, from the growing mutant rebellion.  It reacts only to mutant genetics and acts as a powerful disruptor, powerful enough, even on its lowest setting to nearly kill Juggernaut.  Sergeant Fury FY working with Reed Richards FY from the inside sneak the information concerning the Field to mutant agents on the outside, Cannonball FY, Marvel Man FY, and Firestar FY, who bring the intel back to their leader, Magneto FY.  Using the information, a strike force, consisting of these three, Sebastian Shaw FY, Beast FY, and Juggernaut FY use the codes to temporarily deactivate the Field so they can find and destroy the Field Generator.  Once accomplished, the army collected by this world's Magneto is able to enter New Memphis City to oppose the forces of Sphinx II.

Mutant Energy Stimulator    A device created by Magneto that bring to the surface any latent mutant powers.  Mesmero used it on the kidnapped Lorna Dane to activate her magnetic powers.

Mutant Force    Mercenaries mutants with super human powers originally gathered together by Magneto, but later they were recruited by Mandrill to help him rob a federal repository (located at the Las Animus air base in Co.) of their gold [DEF #78].  They were eventually defeated by the combined might of the Defenders and the Wasp and Yellowjacket I, and they were turned over to the authorities, but the authorities already had something in mind for them.  They were asked to help the military take on the Hulk, and failing that, they were asked to testify at a star chamber inquest that labeled the heroes as the criminals [DEF #87].  Team consisting of:  Burner, Lifter, Peeper, Shocker II, Slither [first seen members].

Mutant Liberation Force    In the Forever Yesterday alternate reality, a group of rag tag super powered mutants who, under Magneto FY, are fighting to overthrow the tyrannical and oppressive empress, Sphinx II.  Their base of operations is located in an unused bunker under a refinery in New Hebrides, and their greatest obstacle, other than the threat of the Avengers FY whose brutality toward mutants is well known, is the Mutant Detection Filed that surrounds the capital city of New Memphis on Maqaman Island.  After years of plotting and planning, they finally have a way around the dreaded and deadly field; a mole on the inside, Reed Richards FY, has provided them with codes to temporarily deactivate the Field.  While a team of hand chosen heroes under Sebastian Shaw FY assaults Maqaman through the unused Libredes Tunnel, Magneto gathers together an army of other heroes to assault the city once the Field is down.  Despite the plan proceeding like clockwork, even the combined might of all the heroes is no match for the powerful empress, and it isn't until two members of the Force, Marvel Man FY and Firestar FY, join together with a member of the Avengers, Nova FY, and the son of the head of the Taylor Foundation-recently killed at her order-Dwayne Taylor, and force Sphinx II to view the truth of what she had been doing presented by Sayge FY that her reign is brought to an end.  Members include FY versions of:  Magneto, Cannonball, Marvel Man, Firestar, Wolverine, Cyclops, Polaris, Beast, Unus, Blob, Juggernaut, Rogue, Sebastian Shaw, White Queen, Forge, Sabretooth, Havok, Iceman, Angel.

Mutant Master     (deceased)  The evil leader of Factor Three, thought to be a mutant but turns out to be an alien from Sirius bent on taking over the Earth.  Commits suicide rather than be captured when the rest of his crew turns against him with the X-Men.  GA:  Factor Three.

Mutant Research Center    The cutting medical and research facility created and run by Dr. Moira MacTaggert which was the foremost authority on mutant kind.  Located on remote Muir Island, it served not only as a sanctuary for some mutants such as Jaime Madrox and Wolfbane, but was also a holding facility for the other less benign, like Magneto (when he was reduced to infancy), Mutant X, and Dragonfly.  The Center was first seen when the X-Men  came out by hovercraft to check on Madrox, who had been left in charge while Moira played housekeeper to the X-Mansion for her old flame Charles Xavier, and found that Magneto had been restored by Eric the Red II and got their butts handed to them.

Mutant X    (deceased)  (Joseph MacTaggert Jr., Kevin Proteus, see:  Proteus II)    The mutant name originally given to the son of Moira MacTaggert that has the ability to draw power from the life energy of people by inhabiting and burning out their bodies, and who was being held at the Mutant Research Center on Muir Island, heavily sedated for the good of all mankind, until Moira could discover a cure.  When Magneto was restored to being an adult and tussled with the X-Men, the fight awoke the sedated being.  It escaped and it's first victim was the boat rental man, Angus MacWhirter from Stornoway who had come out to the island to exact revenge on the X-Men for wrecking his hovercraft (even though restitution was made).  It first encountered the X-Men after escaping the island, and he renamed himself and displayed his powers to alter perception (first thought to be the ability to alter reality).   REL:  Son of Moira and Joe MacTaggert, Sr.

Mutate    A Deviant who has been intentionally genetically altered to make him a more fierce and effective warrior, not to be confused with the Rejects who were born excessively malformed.  The first seen Mutates resembled winged dragons and were part of Kro's attack on NYC to foment distrust in the newly arrived Celestials.

Mutates     Not to be confused with the off branch of the Deviants, these creatures are a race that mutated from human beings in the post nuclear apocalyptic world of an alternate future Earth.  After the second nuclear war, humans, because of the fallout, changed into these twisted creatures with oversized ears (looking like a mix between humans and Skrulls). who humbled the remains of the human race.  Pluto, in his plans to get revenge on Thor I, used them as his army, but after the thunder god's defeat, he used them to invade the 20th century.  Their original weaponry was scavenged from their devastated world, but the Lord of Hades provided them with bigger and better weapons.  Later, Pluto employed the creatures in his plan to seize control of Olympus by eliminating the only two who could stop it, Hercules and Venus, by marrying them to Hypolyta and Ares, binding their hands by Olympian law from lifting a finger against their new spouses.  The lord of the underworld sent armies of his minions to capture the pair on the UCLA campus, but ended up meeting with the newly formed team, the Champions.  later they were brought right into Olympus to rub Zeus' nose in the whole matter, until his plan fell apart [CHM #1-3].

Myrmidon    A large powerful android created by the same designer as the Overseer, employed to defend the mechanical tyrant.  He is incredibly strong and is able to absorb sound and magnify it as a weapon.  Iron Man I defeats him by altering his circuitry so that he attacks the Overseer and is destroyed.

Myrtle    An elderly woman who, while driving with her husband, was passed by the Ghost Rider IV being pursued by the LA police and she mistook him for a Hell's Angel.  REL:  Wife of Henry.

Mysterio    (Quentin Beck, see:  'Dr. Ludwig Rinehart')  An ex-special effects/stuntman who turned the use of his special abilities to a life of crime.  Able to create fantastic illusions to aid him in his criminal work and to discredit Spider-Man.        GA: Sinister Six.

Mystic Mountain    The hidden mountain near the location of Asgard, also the site of Xandu (Zanadu).  The mountain is composed entirely of purest crystal and rises from the crater of the Jinni Devil.  It was used by Mogul as a fortress and a weapon to help him defeat the forces of Thor I.  Later, another mountain fortress of the same name is used in Asgard by Ollerus the Unmerciful against the forces of Hela in a bid to usurp her position as goddess of the dead.  When his pawns, the Defenders, realize they've been duped and start working for the other side, the fortress is destroyed by a very unhappy Hulk [DEF #68].

Mystic Mountain Tale    Another adventure by Thor and The Warriors Three which first took them to Nostrand where they defeated Fafnir and later involved the conquering of Mogul who was attempting to overthrow Hogun's home land.

Mystique    (Raven Darkholm)  A blue skinned mutant with the ability to not only change her shape (including clothing) to exactly resemble any other person, male or female, of the same approximate size, but can also alter her voice patterns and scent to mimic another.  She started her career as the Deputy Director of the Defense Advanced Research Planning Agency, where she first encountered Ms. Marvel I, then became the leader of the second Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, treating her followers more as family than as subordinates, and from there she graduated, with the help of Dr. Valerie Cooper, as the leader of the governmentally sanctioned team of mutants.  Later, she is a love interest of Forge.   REL:  Mother of Nightcrawler.  Foster mother of Rogue.  Once believed to be the mother of Wolverine.  GA:  Brotherhood of Evil Mutants II, Freedom Force.
