The Woodfords Club

About the Club

The Woodfords Club was organized on September 19, 1913 as a social club. The clubhouse was formally opened on January 13, 1914. The club's crest is an adaptation of that of the prominent and respected Woodford family, that in the early nineteenth century had settled in what is now the Woodfords district of Portland.

Membership originally comprised conservative businessmen from Portland. The clubhouse was expanded in 1923 to accommodate an increasing membership. Although the membership ceiling had been increased from 300 to 325 and later to 500, a waiting list for membership, sometimes several years long, was not uncommon. Resident membership now is open to men living within a 50 mile radius of Portland; non-resident membership now is open to men living beyond that radius. Currently, dues are $150 per year for resident members and $75 per year for non-resident members. Meal cost at club functions normally is$8.

The clubhouse's main hall can accommodate 200 people and can seat 144 comfortably for a meal. The club's members gather weekly for a meal and entertainment each Friday evening from October though April. Meals are prepared in the clubhouse's fully-equipped kitchen by the club's staff. The lounge can seat 30 on its couches and oversized chairs. The meeting/card room can seat 28 at tables or up to 40 for presentations. While normally available to club members, these rooms, which are on the main floor, also are offered for rent to the general public.

The second floor houses a large pool/billiard room with 6 tables and a meeting/card room similar in size to that on the main floor. In the basement, the club boasts five candlepin bowling lanes and a television lounge with a dart board. The basement and second floor are reserved for use by club members and their guests. They are neither available to nor offered for rent to the general public.

The clubhouse currently is undergoing interior renovation and upgrade and now boasts comfortable chairs and improved acoustics in the main hall and handicapped accessible entrances and bathroom facilities on the main floor. The clubhouse also has a newly installed secure wireless network with a high speed Internet connection for general use by club members and, on request, by non-club members during specific functions.
